You will not have ill effects except in the pocketbook if caught by the tax man. In Michigan they can go back 7 years of fuel receipts. So if you had a 7 year old truck they figure the mileage/MPG X tax and there is your fine. For example: if you had 100K truck and they say you get 10MPG and a tax of .26 the fine would be $2600

I also farm and have to keep two tanks of fuel on the farm. Any licensed vehicle has to be using taxed fuel.

Thumbs down no to bad

ok, well thats not to bad
if you have 100k at 10mpg = @ .26cent = 2600 cost
but you saving if you really used it 100 with no taxed fuel which i sure it would be the use of red fuel once in a while.
cost of would still be taxed 2600$ and you have paid tax's on most of that all ready so it sound like if you do run it red all the time you would lose less of you tax money, because you would only have to pay it once your caught.

Woops - forgot to mention that you are flagged as not to have any farm tax exemption for the next 7 years - that would be fuel, parts, fertilizer, seeds, etc.

Ford SSM, Special Service Message(s) issued 10/21/05 regarding this issue:

SSM 18896 & 18897 EPA EMERGENCY FUEL USAGE WAIVER - HIGH-SULFUR DIESEL FUEL USAGE
IN RESPONSE TO REFINERY DAMAGE CAUSED BY HURRICANES KATRINA AND RITA, THE EPA ISSUED A TEMPORARY FUEL USAGE WAIVER TO ELIMINATE POTENTIAL FUEL SHORTAGES. THIS WAIVER PERMITS DISTRIBUTION OF NON-ROAD APPLICATION HIGH-SULFUR DIESEL FUEL (GREATER THAN 500 PPM SULFUR), WITH OR WITHOUT RED DYE, TEMPORARILY FOR HIGHWAY APPLICATIONS IN SOME AREAS OF THE U.S.. THE USE OF HIGH-SULFUR DIESEL FUEL IS NOT RECOMMENDED BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY FOR THESE APPLICATIONS AS OUTLINED IN THE OWNER'S GUIDE AND DIESEL SUPPLEMENTS. FORD MOTOR COMPANY RECOMMENDS LOW-SULFUR (LESS THAN 500 PPM SULFUR), NUMBER D-1 OR D-2 DIESEL FUEL. THE USE OF NON-RECOMMENDED DIESEL FUELS CAN RESULT IN ENGINE DAMAGE.
SPECIFIC REGIONAL AND TIME LIMIT INFORMATION IS TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE AT WWW.EPA.GOV ORWWW.EPA.GOV/KATRINA/ACTIVITIES.HTML.

IF NON-ROAD (HIGH SULFUR) DIESEL FUEL WAS USED AT ANYTIME DURING AN OIL AND FILTER SERVICE INTERVAL, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE OIL AND FILTER SERVICE INTERVAL BE SHORTENED BY 50 PERCENT. SUCH SERVICE INTERVALS SHOULD BE SHORTENED BY 50 PERCENT WHETHER BASED ON HOURS OF OPERATION OR MILEAGE ACCUMULATION.

Also not burning the correct fuel could also take out the Orings in the injection pump. That by the way has happen in the earlier 7.3,s

Rumor has it that there is now something like a radar gun that they can just point at the vehicle and it 'reads' the emissions. This will tell them whether it is dyed fuel or not and no more need to dip the tanks. So beware.

Another forum I am on, one guy in CT or MA said they did it by his fire station on the generator and he saw it in action. I know it's the Internet, but FYI.
