tf case oil?

hello to everyone in the forum .Im a new member and would like info on the oil recomendation for a 2001exc 4x4 tfcase? pulled the plug out and looks like trany oil ?.thank you.

Yes. Tranny fluid is used. Use the same fluid that you would put in your 4R100 tranny. Mercon.

I was getting the oil changed yesterday, the wife is taking the X on a 750 mile trip this weekend. The guy at the shop showed me the tf case fluid, said it really need changed. Usually I'll do most of this stuff myself, but I knew I wouldn't have time, I asked him how much, he said $20.00, I told him to go for it. Is that a reasonable price? I figure by the time I get the fluid, do the job, dispose of the waste, I'm going to burn an hour anyway.
