I purchaced a 1979 F-250 4X4 about 2 month ago. The man I bought it from said it was a fresh 460. It was a fresh 4002V. No big deal I thought. He just did not know. I got the truck home and drove it a bit for a few days. It was still loosening up. The catch is that Haynes lists a 460 4V for the 1979 F-250 as on option engine code "J" I think and sure enough the Louisville,KY built F-250 4X4 has a CGVW of 8410 weird ,it hase factory eletrical outlet in the side of the cad that has a plate bolted over it and that "J" in the Engine code that matches the Haynes manual. The front is a Dana 60 the rear is a dana 60-f7 or someting similar. The point being that everyone is saying that the 1979 F-250 did not have a 460-4V. I think this one did. I also--- in looking for a used or rebuilt 460 ran across a guy with a extended cab NP&FS F250 4x4 with a 460-4v still in it. Maybe they got a special order package for fleet purchace or?

I am not sure about most of that but I do know that my brother-in-laws truck came with a 460. And his is a 79. Not sure if this helps or not but your truck sounds intresting....good luck.
Maybe we need to write a book on our year models...like a history of...I have one for Mustangs so I am sure one one trucks is possible. Sure would be a good bit of reference material..CAL

1979 F-250s did come with 460s, the 2WD models only, that's why there's an option listed for it. The biggest engine you could get in the 4WD was the 400. The D60 front end was optional on special packages like the "Snow Fighter".
