Exhausting Question

Well, the old Bronc seems to have developed an exhaust leak at the joint between the exhaust manifold and the "Y" pipe. I thought the gasket may have blown so I pulled the bolts off and looked at the joint. I don't see any remnants of a gasket at all.

Does anyone know for sure if there is supposed to be a graphite dounut gasket between the manifold and the "Y" pipe? or is this supposed to be a metal-to-metal fit? This is a 1993 5.8L if that makes a difference.

Thanks,

Corey

It's a ball/socket fit. The best IMO. Needs tightened. No gasket at all.

Great! I'll put a couple of extra cranks on the bolts and see how it works.

Thanks!

Yeah, STY, you got it... no gasket ever in there. If the leak has been present for a while and soot has built up around the leak point, it may help to drop the Y-pipe far enough to scrub the soot and carbon away from the mating surfaces to achieve a better seal when you tighten it back up.
