x pipe and distance from engine

ok so i have read on here on numerous topics about putting an X-Pipe in when running duals.....why is that?...what does this do for the exhaust?...and another question is how do you get a deeper tone from moving the mufflers as far from the engine as possible?....is this something that everyone agrees on?....thanks for the help, and input/info would be greatly appreciated

Muffler wise, as far back as possible should be quieter.

If your gonna use an X pipe, use the truck version http://pypesexhaust.com/images/xvt10.jpg
as I cannot say how a standard X pipe would affect the sound, I can say the design I linked you too, cuts the acceleration/cruise decibals down big time. If you do use the other design, I'd be curious as to your results.

On a v-8 where exhaust gas pulses are of concern...ideally you'd install the X pipe at the hottest point on the exhaust system...with an inline six...I don't think it much matters.

With that said, more experienced inliners, stated it should be installed as close to the exhaust manifolds/headers as possible. Mines installed right under the rear of the cab.

So you ruled out a single exhaust completely?
What mufflers do you plan on using?

Good luck

yea i ruled out the single exhaust, i want the look of the 2 pipes turning out behind each wheel with big ol tips.....so you have your muffler right under the cab?.....so i guess that really doesnt matter, yea i read that the farther back the deeper but i dont understand how that would happen, im gonna go with you, thanks for the help man, im going with a mello-tone muffler, several different exhaust shops have told me that this is what i should go with cause it will give me the deepest sound possible, they told me a FM would just make it sound more like a 6 compared to the mello-tone muffler, im gonna explore the other possibilities with mufflers thanks man

so i went to my local exhaust shop, the guy told me that if he installed an x pipe on my truck he would be stealing my money, he said that since im going with a single in dual out muffler it acts as an x pipe for me, then i asked him about the mello-tone muffler, he pulled out a FM and a Mello-tone and put them side by side, they were identical, then he showed me the mello tone all the stuff on the inside is completely welded where as the FM was tac welded, then he had me lift both of them, the FM was half the weight of the Mello-tone.....plus the mello tone has a lifetime warrenty where as the FM only one year.....then he told me that mello tone doesnt advertise on the internet and stuff where FM spends millions a year to advertise in my opinion the million that mello tone saves goes right into the quality and design of the muffler....just my 2 cents tho....but thats everything he told me

Your exhaust man would be right...

I thought you were getting true duals...

Single in/ dual out muffler, should sound pretty good.

Seems back when you first brought this up, I searched the net and found most agreed the muffler your looking at, sounds just like a flowmaster.

Interested in reading your thoughts, on the exhaust setup you've described.

Good luck
