Question 4WD conversion to 2WD

Need some input!! What would it take to convert 1991 F150 4WD to a 2WD?
Thinking C6 with a 9" rear end. Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

You'd loose the ABS on a 91 when taking out the 8.8 for the 9" as well as a different driveshaft - it's really not worth it to swap in a 9" as the 8.8 is fine but personal choice is personal choice...

There is an article about 4wd/2wd swaps in the tech articles section that'll explain how to do it. There are also many many topics in this forum from the past that you could pull up with the search feature to learn more info. It's pretty straight-forward.

The question is, WHY? It's usually the other way around.

I'm building a desert prerunner, the 4wd is nice but more components to worry about.

I'm not real familiar with pre runner trucks but it's my guess then that most of the 2wd front end is custom made anyway so all you need to get rid of is the t-case and substitute a longer rear driveshaft. The rest of the 4x4 system should be throw away, replaced by long travel Twin I beam arms and radius arms that should bolt up to the same places (although you would probably want longer radius arms) I think if you get a good 2wd lift kit it should probably come with most or all of the stuff you need for the conversion

What you're saying is that I could be able to remove the transfer from the tranny and remove the driveline going out to the front axle and the tranny would function properly? For some reason I thought that the tranny/transfer combo on the 91 F150 was one single unit.

What part of the country are you in? I might be able to help you with the bills of the swap.

They are two separate units, but you may have too change the adapter at the trans output or maybe the whole trans to allow use of a 2wd driveshaft, I'm not positive. Also if you dont care about the extra weight and want to save cash just remove the front drive shaft, front axle shafts, and the gearset and call it a day.

Might be easier to remove the front driveshaft and just not shift it into 4WD.

That aside, many guys here have asked about converting a 2WD F150 to 4wd, so if you search the posts and find a few of these guys, if you get lucky and live near one or two, you guys could park side by side in one of your driveways and swap parts over.

Nothing's wrong with the 8.8 rear, but if you're going to upgrade, you might as well go for the "real" real - the 10.25 sterling, which would allow you to keep the RABS.

Since four wheel drive trucks are worth more money than two wheel drive trucks it looks to me that it would be easier to sell this one and buy a two wheel drive truck. Since you'll get more money for the 4wd one you should have extra money after buying the 2wd one left over for the extra stuff you want to put on it.

FYI, the 4wd and 2wd suspensions are almost identical - their overall design is the same (making them interchangeable). The only added parts are the differential - and axle shafts going through it to the hubs. Those are pretty solid parts and not like the new IFS stuff that people really consider "more to break/repair". These 4wds are pretty simple and I don't see a need to remove it on the "more to break/repair" basis. You'd be right if you were looking for the 2wd style suspension but the 4wd is the same thing so that won't improve anything. The only extra part in this mess is the transfer case - again - not something to remove on a "another part to break" basis - but to each his own...

You could make a nice long travel suspension out of a Ford TTB 4wd - just like ya can with the 2wd. I'd much rather have a 4wd prerunner instead of a 2wd prerunner when their suspension is just as good.
