Clutch Replacement price

I have an 86 f250 4wd np435 tranny, and my clutch went out today, it slips very bad.

What ball park price range should I be looking at, to have the clutch replaced and the flywheel resurfaced? What brand clutch should I have put in, any brands?

thanks!
Ryan

for a daily driver , between three and five hundred dollars for someone else to do it, everyone has a different opinion about which brand or type . Id go with the one that the shop that puts it in recomends because they will have to warrentee it and if you go with some oddball of your own , they will warrentee thier labor but not the parts, my 2c's, bob

I called 5 different shops, they all want that much.

They must have all grouped together to screw people over..

I got a quote of $624 for a 2wd truck, but I don't recall if that included a new slave cylinder or not. You could do it yourself for less than $300. Question is do you want too.

My mechanic will actually run the job through the computer and show me that it takes however many hours to do the job. If you have a frequent mechanic, he will probably do the same if he's honest.

They tend to charge around $70/hour around here, the recent up in price being credited to higher energy costs. BTW, I've never had a flywheel turned....how much does that usually run?

It was 750 to have the new heavy duty clutch put in, new rear main seal, and a U joint that was clanking away taken care of. They resurfaced the flywheel and everything.

My old clutch was so stiff, this new one is like butter!
I was so used to my old clutch, when I went to shift to 2nd gear, my head almost flew out the window because it poped so hard hah! I was used to just letting the clutch out fast and not worrying about it! haha.

Its easy to figure: Labor at 75/hr X 4 hrs = $300 Add to that, a clutch kit from a quality supplier (Luk or Sachs) retail at $250. Resurfacing the flywheel (which should never be skipped) is another $75 and your total is: $625

That number can go up or down depending on where you are. Obviously it will be more in bigger cities and less in smaller towns due to the shop's overhead and wages. And that number doesn't include hydraulics if it needs it.

I just went through this.... all the shops wanted 800+ to do the job, and I struggled to find a supplier of a complete clutch kit for $300.

Then I asked a local family owned store I was in buying washer fluid, figuring they'd be more expensive... $200 plus tax. Includes OEM new clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, alignment tool and a pilot bearing.

it should be here tomorrow. Definately call around for better pricing, or check places like www.rockauto.com

$50-75 depending on the shop.

If you have access to a brake turning machine, you can turn it yourself on that (just did mine today actually).

The key is to go SLOW.
