KO, your right. Dana 44's never came with Dana 60 outers. It's the oposite. Sparky what you have is a 100% Dana 44 with external type lockouts. You can order warns for that for about 100 bucks. You will have to use different bolts to hold them to the hub because the 3" ones you have now won't work. The warn will taper down to the lockout face, thus the bolts won't have to go all the way through the housing. You probably need new ones because the plastic spinner on those has cracked and will no longer locate the pin that engages the lock. I actually have one of the hybrid axles no body wants. It is a Low pinion Dana 60 center, tubes, knuckles. The spindle is where it goes to dana 44. D44 spindle, bearings and lockout hubs. (the big ones like you have.) The axle shafts are 30 spline inner and 19 spline outter. Just like a d44. But the knuckle ujoint is dana 60. In short its a d60 housing with d44 outter equipment. If I'm not mistaken they only made it from 1977 to 77 1/2. I spent about 2 years gathering up parts and pieces for those lockout hubs. I now have 2 full sets. You can look for them on d44's for chevys, or fords. But the most important part of them is the plastic spinner. If it's not in good shape it won't work. I even took the plastic pieces and drilled new holes for the locating pin and that worked if you shave the index tab that rides in the chrome ring. It will no longer point to lock or free, but it will work. Check it out. You can dis assemble that whole hub , it's just got a few snap rings. But you can order warn replacements. Just ask for d44 19 spline external mount hubs and they will work, I promise.

Hi, you have a dana 44 frontend. Closed knuckle. Usually they are in 76 and earlier trucks. I try to stick with 77 because of the big hubs and open axles. You will know a 60 if you see it, it will be massive and it will have 60 on it. If it has 44 of any kind on it, it is a 44. Was it upside down on the front side of the pumpkin on passenger side on top edge? Drum brakes? I have frontends like that and have had no problem with them. I have had some 60 fronts also.

I have a 79 150 with a 5 lug 44, and a 79 250 with a 8 lug 44. The only difference between the 2 is # of lugs and the 250 has larger inner wheel bearings. The axle u joints, ball joints, hubs, axles etc. are the same

ironmule you are completley wrong about his frontend being a closed knuckle. if you look at the pictures it is clear as day that the ujoints are showing. where as with a closed knuckle, the knuckle pivotes on what looks like a giant steel ball. and no u-joints are visible.
