Wife asked me to build a case for her Grandfathers burial flag. He was a WWII Navy vet. She also wants to display some of his medals with it. Is there a proper way for displaying these flags? Ya know, does it have to point up? I was thinking of making a box, and dividing it in half Diagonally, would that appropriate?
I would think that displaying it in a nice case should be appropriate enough. IMO that shows you have great respect for him, and you show it in your own way, by displaying it.
Find a local shop that makes shadow boxes. They come in all shapes and sizes- with a section for the folded flag. You should be able to find a shop in any military town. They'll know all the particulars. Good on you for taking this for action.
You don't show your location by your name. Try looking around Norfolk, VA. I'm sure that some of the builders around here can ship a shadow box in whatever shape you want. (I've seen them in the shape of a ship's wheel, for instance. Very Sharp!) You can also have them built to accomodate some or all of the medals, and you should be proud of the sacrifices those WWII men (and women) made for all of us.
You can purhase shadow boxes for flags and medals. It would be much easier than building them. When displaying the medals, doa bit of research to be sure you have the medals in the correect order of presedence (when viewing, the highest presedence medals will be on the left).
try this link to give you an idea of how the flag is displayed with the decorations..
The VA were I work used to make them in the woodshop, either for the flag only or for the flag and patches/medals. Unfortunately with budget cuts the wood shop is no more. Did get one for my dad's flag and medals before tehy closed, though. I have seen them befoer on websites which specialize in military medals, awards, etc.
If I am understanding what you have in mind---I believe the proper way to display this flag would be folded (obviously in a triangle, no red showing), point up, in the upper right-hand corner of the case. Below, in the lower left-hand corner you could display the medals, and perhaps a picture or two.
The boat wheel is neat, only problem, he never traveled on a ship. He was a civil engineer for the navy.
I never piloted a plane for the Air Force, either, but Air Force insignia is proper. The Air Force PILOT badge is something I did not earn and would not display in my award case.
