1997 powerstroke 138,000 miles.
seems like it does this soon after starting (within 5 minutes).this has happened about three times so far in the past three weeks.
start truck , start driving (everything normal) going down the road just fine; then the truck just about dies. ,will barely idle. you can't give it more petal. then after about 30 seconds to 1 minute it clears up by itself. and full power is restored..........
injector pressure regulator, someone else had the same problem the other day. i told him to change it he did no more problem.it in back of the high pressure pump, driver side recktangle box under the fuel bowl shield, it lifts up to get to fuel bowl says powerstroke on it, made of plastic painted black about 1 ft by 1 ft square HPPumpin just under that frount,
then the truck just about dies. ,will barely idle. you can't give it more petal. then after about 30 seconds to 1 minute it clears up by itself. and full power is restored
If it was CPS truck wouldnt even idle.
I am in the IPR camp.
Could also be an EBPV problem.

I disagree, cps went bad in my truck awhile back with very intermitant symptoms. Truck would start and run for sometimes 10 min upto couple hrs and sometimes days in between dying. Finally it would only run 5-10 min at a time and cps it was.
First thing to check is the tach moving while cranking engine over? If not change the cps out, if it is then cps is currently working.

The most significant word in your post is "dying". If you read TXracer's post he says "just about dies" indicating the truck keeps running at greatly reduced capacity.
I dont think this fits the profile of a CPS malfunction. Even though the malfunction is intermittent when the CPS is actively malfuncioning the truck wont run, once the malfunction clears the truck may well run normally.

when the motor (just about dies) I would say it might be running at 400 rpm .
one time the check engine light came on. and shut off when power came back.Took truck to my brothers shop and he ran the codes. No codes were found. Guess ford doesn't store codes in a history section. He works mostly on cars
tach sits on zero before i crank the starter. during cranking the tach needle drops below zero until the motor starts..............does this mean it is the cps?
truck started running rough with no power. scanned codes and no codes came up.
replaced the cps....found on ebay for 49.95 and 6.00 shipping ,new ford unit.
well it did not fix the truck.so now i have a spare.
took truck to a local ford powerstroke guru and he found the problem. number 5 cylinder was not firing. He showed me the connection at the valve cover (could see it was burnt). he wanted 1100 to fix the truck with new harnesses under valve cover , new gasket and new main harness.
well I,m a do it yourselfer.......$80.00 fee to diagnose the truck.
Went to ford and got new vcover gasket, new harness under valve cover and main harness repair kit.(this fixes connectors at valve cover, but does not include metal connectors).SO i robbed a metal connector off the old harness under valve cover.Small and difficult to get off and be able to reuse them. But i did it.
