Just dropped the $1000 deposit on my F350 Lariat FX4 crewcab, automatic, with the 4.30 gears! She'll be a BIG green machine with tan leather.
I'd like to thank all of you guys for the information I've gotten off this site! It helped a LOT with what choices to make on the option list. Still REALLY nervous about the 4.30 gears! I couldnt do ANY kind of test drive at all as there isnt a V10 anywhere to be found around here, ALL diesels! I overheard the dealers talking "GOOD GOD! He wants a V10 with that rearend!?! He must own stock in an oil company." I'm wanting to put the biggest tire I can on the truck without them rubbing as soon as I pick it up. So I'm hopeing the 4.30's are the ticket. I'm wanting to run BFG All Terrains... Anybody know what size I can fit?
As I understand it I'll be looking at about 12mpg empty... I read right didnt I!?!?!
Last time I checked I got 12.8 with over 106K miles on it. The time before last I got 11.2 - so it depends on what you're doing at the time. The 12.8 was highway miles while the 11.2 was country driving unloaded.
And 4.30 gearing is not a big load of LOW. In the 5's maybe, but not 4.30's. Maybe the dealers have never driven a truck with 4.30 gearing. Yes, 2600 RPMs is different than 1900, but is 700 RPMs gonna show that much change at the pump with the V10? I don't think so.
On the other hand - maybe you need to put up a jar to start saving for LOWER gears in the future?
You will be hooked for life! I would recommend you stay with the stock conti tires at least till you get 10-15k miles just to get some good out of them. They probably won't bring much if you sell them or trade up, and I get 12 to 13 mpg with them.....If you want to dump them, I might be interested as I am burning mine down with just 12,000 miles and will be needing some replacements soon!
Just as well brush up those pearly whites and get that BSEG ready!
Just don't let your wife drive it too much. My wife keeps complaining that the rear wheels keep spining to easily, she spun it around in an intersection the other day. She gets 9.5 mpg. I get about 12.
Big Cheese Stick, When you drive that V10 home, you are going to want to change your name to Big Smile. You are going to love the truck and yes, you got the right rear end.
4.10 and 4.30 are so close, mileage is the same and you want bigger tires. Too bad Ford didn't offer the 4.56s as Captchas likes his and never saw a drop in mileage.
You did the right thing brother. I was set on ordering my '04 when I got it, but the dealer had what I wanted on the lot, minus the 4.30's. It had the 3.73's and the gears felt too tall for that truck. By no means did it struggle, but they are not what that truck needs.
You will be SO MUCH happier that you got the 4.30's!
Let us know when you get it in. If you can stop giggling for a few minutes when you get it.

04' V-10, 6-speed, 4:30, DRW here,,,absolutley love it,,the thing will lug in OD up hill at 1100rpm at 40 mph,,or I can do 75 mph in 3rd up hill, (4700 rpm)pulling a 23' trailer, just about pushing the car in front, made me chuckle when the cloud of black smoke came out of that Camry, when it downshifted, trying to get away from the V-10,, He,,He !
WOW Sounds like a nice rig You will love it. I have the BFG allterains and they rub a bit when I make a sharp turn eaither way. I am running 285,75s but they really make the truck look good. 2003 F-350 CC LB VEEE-10.
Cant thank you guys enough for the advise I've gotten, and the compliments above! Its gonna be a LOOOONNNNGGGGG 6 weeks!!!
jasontrucks76,
I'm right there with ya. The BFG's look awsume! I had Mud Terrains on my truck before this one and though they looked great and had really agressive looking tread, they didnt hook up NEARLY as well as the BFG all terrains I've had in the past. I'm probably going to get either the BFG A/T's or new wheels and Super Swampers. The Swampers are AMAZING off road!!! No 18" wheel sizes though.
You will love the vehicle. I have an 06 F350 Lariat with the 4:30 rear. This truck simply rocks. You will not believe how nice it is. The Ford team did a great job with this guy. Even my better half thinks that this truck is great would buy another one in a heartbeat.
Good luck with the 6 week wait. (I drove April my wife crazy during the wait!)
