Windows XP Help

I screwed something up in my Registry. Can I just repair the OS or do I need to wipe it clean and do it again. I have backed up what I can but don't really want to reinstall from scratch if I don't have to, or is there some other way to fix this??

Thanks in Advance.

Use the System Restore feature. Go to the Help screen and it's on there. Simply click on a date that it was working ok and it'll reboot and take you back there....

There were no Restore points in there. I was using a Registry Cleaner and something went WRONG. Thanks for the quick reply though

Did your registry cleaner come with a restore option (most will have a backup function before tinkering in the registry)? If so, use that to do a restore. May have to browse the directory that the application is stored at (like program files\application name). If it created a backup of the registry, will have a name like backup.reg. If it did make a backup, you can double click on the .reg file and restore. Not sure if it made one though.

With no backup of the registry and no Restore Points, you do not have much of an option other than use the OS CD and choose to do a repair of the OS. Might require you to re-install some additional applications, depending on what was damaged in the registry.

Good luck to ya

I just went thru this on a friends computer. The repair option didn't fix. I had to do the complete install from scratch. Wipe everything off and spend hours doing all the patches, upgrades etc. from the beginning of XP. NO FUN..

Load the XP CD, choose fresh install not upgrade, pass on chances to repair untill you get to the part where you choose your drive to install it on (it's past the area where they say F6 for RAID drivers). It will tell you there is already an OS on there and ask if you want to repair it, do it. Repair from there and you will not have to start from scratch. Everything you had will survive if done right.

Once again you all have saved me. rangerxlt02 you hit the nail in the head. I was so worried about the info on my computer that I missed the obvious with the back up. Thanks for all the speedy replies.
