I think it's a matter of what you get used to, to an extent. I enjoy driving my truck around, and when I had the opportunity to drive a friend's Chevy, I found out that it handles differently, seems lower to the ground and didn't like the plastic feel and look of the interior. It wasn't a bad truck (it had 175k on it then), just not like mine... I've also had very good fortune with all my Ford vehicles (Aerostar van '89, Mustang LX '86, 97 Mustang, 96 T-Bird, 90 Bronco, '01 F150 and '04 Explorer), so I know what to expect from them. Everyone knows somebody that has had a bad experience with Fords and would never own another, but, I expect you could say the same for any brand.
I have owned a Chevy, and currently own a Dodge and a Ford. I can't tell much difference between them. They all start and get me to where I want to go so it doesn't matter much to me what brand it is. I never keep one long enough to put 100K miles on it so I can't say much about longevity. They salt the roads pretty heavily here in the winter so the bodies go long before the drivetrain...
Drove an '03 Chevy before I bought my '03 Ford. Couldn't tell much difference, except that the Ford is much harder to service with the buried motor (oil filter, plugs, etc) but the Chevy didn't have a King Ranch option. So I bought the Ford and am hoping that it will not need a lot of service.
I grew up with Ford trucks, my Dad was brand loyal so naturally I'm gonna feel the same way...although before my current ride I did take a look at some chev's and dodges and I must say all have excellent qualities about them. Chevy drove real nice and smooth but lacked power at the low end untill you got it up the rpm's then she came to life, the dodge was the opposite, that Hemi has some insane power but I didn't enjoy single digit gas mileage. So that brought me back to good-all-around Ford, had everything I needed in a truck, very balanced in all aspects, although they do look the best compared to rest of them.
I think it's like Jake00 said... we just need competition to make life interesting, but some take it to far. I have always considered myself a Chevy, and honestly I still prefer older Chevys, however with late model stuff I find myself gravitating towards Ford... In fact I currently own a 75 F100 a 2004 Mustang GT (THE BEST YEAR EVER, IMHO ), and a 1967 Belvedere Convertible, no Chevy...
I do however have a lead on a '78 Ford flareside, and a '69 Chevy short step... I personally would much rather have the Chevy, but I'd be very happy with either or keeping my '75 SWB...
When it comes to trucks, I love fords. My first vehicle was a 68 3/4 ton ford pick up. I currently have a 2001 f150 and a 79 custom w/ a 460 and a 2006 HD edition on the way. On the other hand when it comes to cars...I have to lean towards chevy. Especially the late 60's camaro, nova, chevelle, and corvette. I just don't like the looks of the newer chevy trucks, too much plastic.
I have a Ford Ranger and a Chevy Cavalier and like them both very much. Both companies make some good vehicles, some of the bashing stuff is brand loyalty tied to one's ego.
I tend to like the older trucks better than the new ones. I don't need all of the modern conviences offered today, though I will admit they are nice at times.
Now on to the trucks: I generally don't like older chevy trucks because of the design. The front axles were built with a "lead" tire. Which means the front axle isn't completely square on the frame causing one tire to ride ahead of the other. Ever wonder why a GM truck won't track it self in the snow? Dodge did the same thing. My BIL has a '79 GMC, it drives OK, but I don't like the ergonomics of the interior, and it feels cheesy to me. Plus around here, the chevies REALLY rust out, but so does everything else. It just seems to me that GM "blanket" engineers everything. BUt the older chevy trucks do have some qualities about them.
My Ford has flaws too, I won't be a fool and believe otherwise. There are some things on my Ford that I could choke the engineers for. However, my Ford just seems to be a better built rig, but that's just MHO.
Brand bashing: I usually just bash chevies to give the owners a hard time. I would probably do the same thing to Fords if I owned a chevy. Notice I capitalize Ford because it's a proper pronoun, just like chevy is. That's another bash, because what's proper about owning a chevy? lol. Just kiddin'
Well I finally own a GM product again after a 20 years absent. I have never had problems though with the vette and caddies, they where just out of my price range. I still will not own a GM truck though.
Owned 2002 Ford F-150 Lariat and 2004 F-150 XLT (worktruck), currently owning 2005 F-150 Lariat Supercrew, and 2005 Expedition XLT. Relative has owned 2 f-150's in 31 years, has had his current f-150 for almost 16 years, 178,000 miles and still going. Other relative owns a GMC Yukon, but we constantly tease him about his GMC but he teases us back. Overall I'd say every truck has it's good and bads...some brands offer more features than others or more space, towing, etc etc. We've just been most pleased with Fords. I do have to say that I like the new Dodge Charger, but that is the only non-Ford vehicle that I would own. Loyal owner in past, present and future.
(ford truck quality is a lot better than non-owners know).
It's usually just brand loyalty. Each company has good cars and bad cars.
We have had a Chevy Lumina, a Dodge Ram Charger, a Ford Mustang, van and F-150, not to mention the Pontiacs Caddies and Lincolns.
They have all had their pros and cons. Except that 55 Caddy, that thing was perfect in every possible way.
I do love my 78 F-150 though. Have to admit, it is one tough truck.
On a similar subject, I just don't understand how anyone, even Ford enthusiasts can like any Mustang between 1980 and 2004. Pre-80s Mustangs rock, and the new Stang kicks butt, but ugg... those boxy 80s and bland 90s... *shudder*<o></o>
Gloves are off now, bring it on!! j/k To each his own. I like all the mustangs, haven't seen one I wouldn't like to own. Problem is, I can't get a newer one because my wife can't stand any mustang between 1995-2005.
I grew up with chevy's and imports(parent's dont care as long as it gets them there) but my first truck happened to be a ford, and I just fell in love with the body style. I have also had a couple dodges, a toyota, and a chevy luv. I think chevy guys bash harder because of the larger aftermarket support for there stuff. It's more convenient to be a chevy guy.
