i am in the process of building my 81 f150 for offroad/street use. i am now looking for a rebuildable 351w motor wich would be easyer to rebuild carb or injection? and wich would be a better for offroad/street carb or injection??
carb would be easier to rebuild 'less parts'. the same argument for off road/street use also, bob
Yes, it easier to tune to engine mods and better WOT power. While FI can have better drivabilty at times and better cold starting it is hard to beat a good carb for maximum WOT power.
Wide Open Throttle EFI is a bit more to initially set up, but it will out drive a carb anyday. It's also not effected by the bouncing around of off-roading. Better mileage also.
if you have the patience...run efi....better offroad capability, not sensitive to altitude changes....angles, cold starting is easier. on teh street...smoother operation, better economy easier starting etc...
you can never tune a carb as finely as you can efi.....

Maybe if you do not how to setup and match a carb to your needs. FI might have a edge with MPG but not in max power and throttle responce and reliabilty and simplicity to fix too. A good carb and intake still rules there.
I know how to set up a carb, I've been working on race engines for 20 years. You can not mar the fuel curve throughout the entire rpm range with a carb like you can with EFI. The fast Mustangs run EFI due to it's tunability. EFI rarely fails and usually other than a bad fuel pump or maybe an occasional sensor, it's trouble free. My 88 Stang has over 160,000 miles on it and I have never replaced anything in the EFI (including the pump) and it has perfect throttle response and tire shreading WOT power.
Better mileage! just how much would a stock 390 or 300I6 benefit. The cost of one of the holley systems here is 1740. If it does not bring alot of mpg with it, i would say its not worth it.
It's all in what you want. I personally prefer EFI. I think that the Ford SEFI EEC IV is one of the better systems out there (Factory)
If it is in your budget, I would go with an EFI unit like Holley, they are very tunable and drivability is great. It probably wouldn't pay for itself in gas mileage for a very long time, but the way that it would run and perform would be noticable.
The stock 300I6 EFi is a good running engine.
Fuel injection is the only way to go, on or off road. Simply stated, carbs are not dynamicly adjustable for the various conditions (IE air density, altitude or temp) While you can set up a carb to run as well as EFI, it would only be for that EXACT day, with those EXACT conditions.
Horespower for horespower at WOT makes no difference. Either a carb or EFI will deliver the fuel and air needed. It is the rest of the driving range that EFI make sit so much better.
As far as fuel mileage goes, in our marine engines, it has made a verifiable 30% decrease in fuel usage with EFI.

Sigh.....
here we go again.
You cannot tune a carb, no matter what your knowledge level may be, to outperform a computer that takes multiple readings, and makes multiple adjustments per second, period.
If your set up with a twEECer or something similar, FI is easy to change too. Dont get me wrong, I prefer the simplicity of a carb, and I enjoy playing with them, but the reliability and performance of fuel injection simply cannot be matched by a carb, at WOT or otherwise. I agree with LXman
