I've had my 94, F150, Inline 6, 300, 9.4 Ford truck for seven months now and I'm still trying to get it right. It's not the truck though, it's the mechanic. I would take it elsewhere but, there is a reason why I'm stickin with this guy. Very long story short... he told me I could trust the person I bought it from when he said it was a rebuilt engine, and according to the paper work (found after the sale) it was, but come to find out that the people doing that job didn't do it right and I ended up having to pay for a valve job anyway. So, the mechanic does the valve job but he doesn't put the serpentine belt on right and it blew. I only drove it about two miles before I realized there was a problem and parked it. It was hot. I called the mechanic to fix his mistake and when he retrieved it I find out that he drove it all the way to his shop (about 6 1/2 miles) without the belt and now I worry about what damage this could have caused. When he brought it back to me (a 12 mile trip) he had the heater on and I didn't know why because it was warm outside. Should I be concerned that my block was cracked or something? I mentioned the heat just in case it adds info that is needed to come to any conclusions.
he may have had the heater on because he was cold but you also turn the heater on when the engine is over heating because the heater acts like a nother radiator because it uses engine coolant but dont worry about it just keep drivin it
I doubt if he had the heater on because he was cold. It was t-shirt weather outside. I just had an odd feeling about it being on. He did just put in a new type of anti-freeze (red). Do you think he could have just been making sure it was put through the system or something?
I'm inclined to agree with you that I doubt that he drained it, even though he was supposed to because it was dirty. There are a lot of things this guy (or perhaps his hired help) didn't do correctly on this truck. So, should I insist on his using the green stuff? He just used the red because they were moving their shop and it was handy. Grrrrr.
what about the orange that every car manufacture is now using? to the best of my knoledge there is nothing wrong with using it as long as the green was drained and flush.
I REALLY think your mechanic is an idiot who you need to stay away from. Driving the truck without the belt means the water pump isn't spinning. 6 1/2 miles is WAY too long to drive without a water pump. He probably overheated it, and may have blown a head gasket or cracked the block or head.
THEN he goes and puts the wrong anti-freeze in it "because it was handy".
Tell me, please, WHY do you want to stick with this guy?
I dont go to mechanics anymore, and for that exact reason. As stuborn as i am i will insist maintaining my own vehicle, because its only under my warranty. Im fairly new to alot of it but hey its good. Gottaford, don't let it bother you too much. Learn, and read this great forum and never take a mechanics word for it unless you know what hes talking about. Red Collant, never heard of that before, what an odd colour. Im thinking that a gasket would probably be the first to give under pressure but who knows how really hot it got. Now, check your oil level and colour, if it starts looking milky white somethings up. Check your sparkplugs if burning coolant i believe they will look whiter and cleaner than normal.

I went back to him because it was like a chain reaction thing. Like, with this episode, it was his fault that the belt came off and I couldn't afford to pay someone else to haul it, and fix it when he was supposed to do it for free. I thought he was going to use a tow truck though and was in shock when he told me he drove it. He showed me that the oil which was fine, and it's not smoking, so perhaps it's ok.
Another reason he said he put the Dexcool in was because he uses it in all his vehicles and has had good results with it. Whether I can believe him is another story. He said that he flushed it before hand or it would gell, so I'll watch for that too. I have a feeling that this is not over with yet. I'll drive it awhile and see what happens. It's been a trip to say the least. Maybe I'll write the whole story someday... when I'm finished being embarrassed about it.
