I have a 1977 Ford F150 4x4 with a 360 engine. My problem is I have to put the tranny in neutral when I want to stop to get a good brake pedal. If I dont it feels like I have no power brakes. Also I have a rough idle and am running rich, I cant get the carb to lean out no matter how much I adjust the screws. I have checked my vacuum on the intake with a gauge and if I advance the timing and set my idle real high I can get around 13 inches. I had my EGR plate go bad under the carb so I just done away with it and put an aluminum spacer block under the carb with new gaskets. Someone told me to check the vacuum diaphram on the tranny as this may be the cause for my vacuum troubles? Any one have any ideas? Thanks.
I dont think the reservoir is leaking because I can shut the truck off holding the brake pedal and it holds for a long time. I was told if the pedal starts dropping fairly quickly it is leaking. Whether or not that is true I cant say for sure. Thanks for the input though.
Your brakes should not leak down period. The power booster has a one way valve and is supposed to be able to handle two pedal pushes after the engine dies or you lose vacuum. The length of time you hold it down should make no difference.
I would check all the vacuum lines. If you have a pump type vacuum guage this is easy. If not... try disconnecting them one by one(with the engine running and also plugging the hole that leads to the intake/carb naturally). If the engine changes speeds that one was leaking.
