I am just curious if I have to have the hubs in locked to run low range. I put it in 4wd the other day because I was on ice. Well I look down later and notice that it was in the low position. It was defiently not in low range because I had just run down the highway. High range works great but low did not seem to work. Maybe my truck is broke I dunno.
Low range requires park or neutral AND the brake pedal depressed. In other words, you must be fully stopped to engage low range.Hi range is just turn the ****.If I had to guess,I'd say you were in 4 HI. Locking the hubs manually just makes sure they stay locked,if the vacuum system doesn't lock up.I used mine the other day for two hours on the highway in a snowstorm. Sure gives you a feeling of security. I also was praying I wouldn't have to put on the chains. What a drag!
Thanks I had no clue that it had to be in park or neutral to work. I will give that a try one of these days. I have the auto transmission. I dont know what kind it is. I just bought this truck about a month and a half ago. I am still trying to figure it all out.
Do you guys know of anywhere to buy a factory repair manual? The one that costs a couple hundred bucks. I have been trying ebay but I dont think I am searching right.
What I mean by ESOF or manual.....Do you turn a **** on the dash or a lever on the floor to engage 4x4?
Save the money on the manuals, just get a Haynes or Chilton's. It'll cover jsut about anything you want to do on that truck.
Oh I'm sorry. It has the **** on the dash. With the floor lever wouldnt you know it if you put it in low? I know on my bronco when you put it in low. You have to go through quite a bit and pull the lever way up.
Exactly. If you had the manual sytem (T-case and hubs), you'd have to get out lock the hubs and pull the lever to engage. If you were moving, you wouldn't be able to put it in 4L without a REAL bad grinding.
With the ESOF, what you have, you turn the **** and the motor on the t-case engages the front drive line and the hubs are vacuum actuated. If the vacuum system fails, you can put the hubs into the lock position and still have 4X4.
But, you were driving in 4H from the sounds of it, as you weren't stopped with the tranny in N and foot on the brake when you shifted to 4X4. No harm, no foul.
