New Front Suspension Vs Old

Okay time to bring up and old subject.
Because I'm starting to decide whether to keep my truck or move up.

Has anyone had any front end sag with the new coil springs running plows?
I mean after a season of running with a plow.

Whats the ride like without plow pkg springs vs having plow springs?
I heard and read some guys don't like the unloaded ride.

What has everyones thoughts been on this new front end change been?

thanks
Rich

Just an idea, have ya thought about regular springs and airbags? Would definitely help with ride and sag.

I will keep that in mind ,but I never modify my trucks from stock as far as suspension goes. Other things yes.

Thanks

That's the thing, the air bags are bolt on. They don't alter your stock suspension at all. They just increase the load capacity, when needed.

Rich I can't tell you to much about the new coils in the front but I have a of experience with ford coils. I have been running 2wd for years and they are all coils up front with leafs in the back. When I load my work trucks I take them back to the dealer and have the front ends aligned for tire wear because I put a lot of weight on the fronts. I will drop the front from 1 to 1.5 inches and they run like that 24-7 for years. When I unload them and reinstall the box they go right back up to normal height thats more than I can say for the leafs in back. I have almost alway had to do some with the rear leafs before I retire the truck.

I will take the ride of a coil front end over a leak any day.

rvpuller - Thanks a lot for that explanation. It has been my impression that the coils and monobeam for the 4x4's was new in '05, but that when I ordered my '05 2WD it would come with the "old" front suspension, which I had thought meant leaf springs and twin I beams.

What I got was coil springs over twin I beams, and I was puzzled. So you're saying that for 2WD super duties, coils over twin I beams have been the standard for some time? For about how long?

I've been reading about people apparently having tricky steering issues on the newer 4x4's, so I don't consider having the old reliable design to be a negative...

I have the heavy duty service springs (whatever they're called) up front and I Don't Like Them. With no plow or slide-in camper, they cause the front to be way too stiff for everyday use. I believe they're also the cause of the severe bump steer I have (even with a rancho steering stabilzer). I have rancho 9000s at each corner with the in cab controller. Even with that setup, the front is difficult to balance with the back. Regardless of the shock setting up front, the truck will get air when I hit a bump while turning.

At one point, I was in a conversation with a guy here on FTE regarding these springs. He was mentioning that when hooking up his TT with a WDH, he could only get the front to drop a fraction of an inch. He was correct. It's very hard to get those springs to compress.

Mine are coming off.

Mike

Ford have been using coils on the Twin I Beam form I think 1964 but it may have been even earlier than that.

I had an 00 and 04 F350 4X4 with the old leaf springs and the 4 turn lock to lock steering wheel that didn't turn the truck very sharp.

With my 05 F350 4X4, 2 1/2 turns lock to lock and much tighter steering. I drive the old style now and it feels sloppy.

I have the camper pkg on the 05 and had it on the 04.

When you are on smooth black top the coils make my big CC LB feel like a big Lincoln and this big Gal likes the twisties but on washboard gravel you know you are driving a truck, the coils are a little harsher than the leafs were.

I think the tighter 4x4 steering on the 05 and 06 SDs is the best thing Ford ever did to improve these trucks and this truck handles twisty back roads so much better than my last two. Is it the 500 pounds less weight up front ( last 2 were diesels ) or the new front end or a combination of both. I just know this truck goes around corners better than my 02 Honda Accord and that is frikkin incredible for a 7500 pound vehicle.

Fred should be around to give you his ideas on this 4X4 coil front end.

Is the 6.0 really 500lbs heavier then the V10? I can understand it being that much heavier then the 5.4. That V10 is a pretty big hunk of metal too.
