Timing is way off

69 F250 360 4 spd
I thought I timed it at 12 BTDC (without light) and it was too far advanced, so I was going to retard it a little today. I set it to 12 BTDC and it wouldnt start. I realized that the other day when I set it the first time I accidentally set it to 32 BTDC not 12. I couldnt get the truck to run anywhere from 8-12 BTDC. So I set it to 34 BTDC and it runs fine. I turn the crank until the marker is at the respective timing tick on the balancer. Then I put the distributor in and set the rotor to the #1 plug post. Am I doing something wrong or is the timing set on my truck wrong?
Thanks
Aaron

#1 plug position can be anywhere in the 360* cap.
If I remember correctly 20* is equivalent to ONE tooth on the distributor gear.

Timing is way off

Just a thought but sometimes the timing marks on the balancer are wrong, as due to age and wear the outside of the balancer with the timing mark slips.
Why not set #1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Check by removing the sparkplug and feeling for the compression with your finger while someone turns the crank by hand with a breaker bar. Or if you are really good or really lucky you can use a remote starter switch to bump the engine.
When #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke the timing mark should be around 8 degress or so, or whatever the base timing is supposed to be. If it is way off so are the timing marks on the balancer. But you can install the distributor then at the correct position anyway, then just time it by vaccuum.

Another thought, wow 2 in one day Are you setting the timing with the vaccuum advance disconnected and the truck at idle? If not that would give some strange timing readings.

I am going to time it by vaccuum. What should vaccum be at for best performance?
Thanks

Aaron, how do you know it’s set to 34 degrees BTDC. The FE damper only goes up to 30.

If you have the piston at TDC, the crank damper should read 0. When you set the distributor in, and it's all the way down the rotor should point some what in the direction of #1 plug. That's the area the factory sets them in at, the vacuum advance canister woun't hit the manifold. Be sure you disconnect the vacuum line when you set it with a light.
