I would like to swap a disc brake front end into my 72 f-250 4x4 , am currently running on a pretty tired closed knuckle dana 44. It would seem that rebuilding is looking pretty grim . The truck is going to be restored , no mudding , off roading , or plows. I would be greatful for any information to make this happen , thanks mvee72.
I was in the same situation you are in a little while back, the dana 44 drumb brake closed knuckle front end needed a lot of work. What i did was i bought a 77.5 F250 4x4 parts truck. I took the dana 44 disk break front end out and put it in my 72 F250 after replacing a few things. I had manual steering on the 72 and everything bolted right in. The front driveshaft wasn't a problem at all. The only thing that didn't fit was the pass. side shock on the 72 mounts on the rear side of the axel and on the 77 it mounts on the front of the axel. I just used a torch and cut the mount off the frame on the 72 axel and welded it on the rear of the 77 axel. The reason i bought a whole truck was not for just the axel but i also got the real power steering sutup with all the parts and put them in the 72 a few months later. If you have the room and know how i would def. recamend getting an entire 77.5-79 F250 4x4 junker and you will have all the parts to do everything and still have parts to sell and make most if not all your money back from the cost of the truck.
Jeff , thanks for the information , I would also like to replace my front leaf springs with something thats more flexable and offers about 2 inches of extra lift . any sugestions ? thanks , mvee72.
