Importing truck parts to Canada

A question for you Canadians that have bought truck parts from places like PAW or Summit Racing. What costs are involved in importing aftermarket parts from mailorder speed equipment companies in the US...exchange to Cdn$, shipping, GST, are there any others?

Thanks, I just want to make sure that I will really save over just buying locally.

For a LOT of the parts ,they are cheaper or just a little bit more here depending on what you buy and without the affecting hassles.

Most of our suppliers bring stuff in by the truck load therefore lowering the cost to purchase and shipping charges.

In Calgary,we have Mopac Racing that has great prices for speed equipment.

The only way to really save money is to purchase it yourself in the states and bring it back on your person.

This way you could buy something with a sale price as opposed to full retail plus all the applicable taxes.
That's where Alberta does even better than the other provinces because of NO sales Tax.

If you can persuade the supplier to send by mail rather than by UPS or Purolator you will not pay border broker fees, and probably avoid GST also.

Thanks for the tip about Mopac...I called them and I can get a set of Heddman headers for my truck for about the same cost as ordering from Summit Racing.

I wouldn't be so sure that you will avoid the added GST and duty by having things mailed instead of couriered. I've purchased several the majority of my diecast collection from eBay sellers in the states. Almost all of it has been delivered by mail and probably half the time I get an addition bill from Jean and 'is friends for GST and duty. Free trade is only for big corporations don't you know. Bottom line, you may avoid it, but there's no guarantee and I suspect a larger package, particularly from a company rather than from an individual would be more likely to get hit with the extra charge. Getting something shipped in a non-descript box labelled as a gift is likely your best bet.
