Looking for p/n for distributor for 332 Ford truck engine. Would need to be late model, 62 or 63, the only two years that had both vacuum and centrifugal advance. Then I would know what # to give a supplier. All my parts books a couple years too old. I need this dist to upgrade a '56 engine.
Interesting that several of the displacements listed at the heading for this forum were never used in trucks, (312, 341, 368) and several that are not listed were used such as 279, 302, 332. Some call them Lincoln engines, but they were developed for the large trucks as well as Lincolns. A Ford engineer strongly corrected me on this point. Thanks in advance for any help.
Lots of omissions in the forum heading, including the 256.
Since the 317/341/368 were the same family lots got swapped in when still fairly new. I worked part time as a teenage gofer at a Ford dealer who put brand new 368's in 57 F350's destined for wreckers to be used on the NY Thruway.
Im building a vintage wrecker. Starting with a 49 Cab and a 62 F250 frame. Engine will be a 58 Lincoln 430 MEL, the only Ford family that wasnt used in trucks.
The 312 WAS used in trucks, Ford installed them in some mountain state fleet pickups in the 63-4 era. Not mentioned in any dealer or parts literature as these were most likely left over replacement engine stock that was being used instead of sold to scrap.
I replied to your other post about the distributor.
all my sources show it has been discontinued 2 years ago as a common rebuild item. have you considered a new one? like msd?http://www.msdignition.com/dist_21.htm
Thanks 286merc and 390gashog for the replies. I do need to preserve the tach drive. I'll find one eventually. Interesting about the use of 312's in trucks and the 368's in the wreckers. What are you using for a transmission in the one you are building 286?
I'll be going with a FE C6 which is a bolt up swap according to the MEL forum. Then rebuild it to 460 truck specs which is basically a higher volume pump and bigger clutch pack; and put in a Transgo shift kit. The C6 is a super easy tranny to work on.
you have been told wrong by the MEL forum. the FE shares no bellhousing with any other engine besides the FT. Also there is no such thing as building it to 460 truck specs. they were all built the same. you can add 5 forward clutches compared to the factory 3

Thats strange since there are several MEL owners running the impossible then.
460 4x4 trucks came with that bigger clutch pack as well as a higher pressure pump, over the counter Ford parts. Ask any competent tranny shop.
