On my '77 F150, whenever the front axle is engaged, it binds while turning.
Usually it is chacterized by jerking, whining, ect. Is there anyway to fix this?
I was told that old 4x4's always did this and there wasn't too much that could be done about it. True?
I looked at my U-joints on the front axle, and the RH side is slightly loose, nothing to really worry about for now.
does anyone have any ideas about the binding when turning?
It's simply the u-joints in the front axle turning at a sharp angle. You can remedy this by switching to Longfield's CV axles . . . if you've got a LOT of $$ to spend. Just don't gas it too much when you're turned sharp so as not to overstress the u-joints or axles.

I tend not to give it a lot of gas in such situations, and that's a good reason why.
It doesn't bother me too much to warrant spending HUGE cash on Longfeilds. However I would like one of your "import impalers" Ivan. That seems like a much better use of my $$$.
Thanks for all your help guys.
And here I was worried it was axles turning backwards!!!
is it possible that someone has played with the stops for the steering stops? i have never seen it happen but i have heard of this problem caused because of people playing with things they know nothing about.

what does it do with the front hubs locked but onlyin 2hi
i think you should twin stick it, make sure your rear e-brake works, or get a linelock, and jus tput it in front high, hit the rear brake and mat it everytime you need to turn sharp
Thanks for your replies guys. Sorry it took so long to reply. It was a long weekend. Anyhow, the truck is pretty much bone stock, and it drives just fine in 4wd. Just sometimes it really binds when locked in moving at parkinglot speeds. Which that is where the nusiance comes in. I don't like turing it as sharp when I feel it binding. Perhaps I need new U-joints. When in 2wd, it turns just fine with no binding, even with the hubs engaged. I did notice that my front U-joints aren't greaseable, why not. Can I get replacement U-joints that are? Thanks guys.

Bill
you can get greaseable ones, but you have to put the zerk in after you put the axle into the knuckle, or it won't fit.. kinda a pain.
