Pinging?

I noticed yesterday while cruising slightly uphill at someherre around 60, what I thought was pinging.

If I take it out of overdrive, it goes away...or if I also give it a bit more gas it also goes away.

Is this normal or should I try a better gas? I have been using regular.

Mine started this not to long ago and I think it's from the winter gas. A higher octane will clear the problem.

Mine does it with 87 octane, so I normally run 89. With 89 it still sometimes makes some noise at low rpm going up hill.

when is the last time you change the plugs? older plugs can cause pinging, the truck only requires 87 octane you should not HAVE TO RUN HIGHER OCTANE TO STOP THE PINGING! something is causeing it to ping, bad plugs usually. someone with great knowledge will jump in here soon i have a minivan my wife drives and it got so bad even with premium it pinged when you would pul out to pass or where hard on the gas, i went from regular to mid to premium and never thought WHY! finnally a buddy said "whens the last time you did a tune up?" did one solved the problem the van ran great never thought that was the problem but 87 no pinging and way better mpg now! sometime it is something simple you just overlook. if plugs solve it better than running premium as much as gas is these days! sorry for the long post, my pain killers have me rambleing

I may need plugs. The Ex has 80K miles and I have not changed the plugs. We bought it used with 77K miles. I am sure the PO did not change the plugs and the service engine light has come on so a tune up is more than likely what I need. The wife even said the Ex was running poorly the other day coming up a hill.

Time to change the plugs and I know there is a longer plug to use so I will have to search for that before I change the plugs.

I will get back after I change the plugs which should be next week some time.

jscarb2...my truck just turned 8500 miles, while good advice, I'd bet plugs are not my problem.
