Now that winter is here I've noticed my truck is making a lot of noise when it's cold. It sounds a lot like a plastic pulley spinning dry on a metal shaft. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine but figuring out exactly where is hard because obviously the engine is running and making a lot noise to begin with.
The noise isn't there once the truck gets good and warm. When I first start it all the pulleys are spinning. I took the belt off last week and they all spun freely, but that happened to be a day that it warmed up to about 50 so it wasn't really making the noise then.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to start it up and see if the noise is there, and if it is I'll pull the belt again and see if I can recreate it spinning each pulley by hand. Any suggests what to look for?
spray the belt lightly with wd-40 or similar stuff on both sides of the belt. this is a temporary fix, it will tell you if it is the belt. don't try to lube any bearings with it. dripping water on it might work also.
I just had the same problem on my '03. Took it in and had the belt changed. All is good now. I thought it might be the belt tensioner, but nope, just the belt.
I didn't get a chance to look at it this weekend because I swapped out my 2nd row captains chairs for a bench. Thanks for the suggestions though, I'll definitely look at the belt if I don't find any pulleys binding.
