I have a 2001 5.4 and I have gotten used to the exact time it takes to crank and have it start that its just a habit to stop cranking as soon as it fires. Well lately it has been acting like its started so I let off the starter just a second too early then it dies and when I try to start it back up it cranks like its out of fuel tell I let it sit for an hour or more then it fires up like nothing was ever wrong. Now I can't get it to start at all and I waited a day, it acts like the computer has the fuel shut off. Im thinking something is screwing up the computer but I don't know enough about it to know what will fix it. So any mechanics that know anything about EFI I would appreciate your help
Alex ,did you try pushing the go pedal just a little while trying to start it?If not try it.
If it starts and runs while holding your foot on the pedal, you have a IAC problem.
Get back to us we can help you .

Watch for black or dark exhuast on start up too, that would almost confirm the IAC. Mine did this, I took it, off sprayed some panther juice in there, worked the valve back and forth and it's been fine since. That was last August ('04). I hope that your problem is as simple as that. Rob
Idle Air Control valve. It is located on the rear of the upper intake elbow just under the cowl edge. It is held on by 2 8mm bolts and has a 2 wire plug on the end.
Mine would start then immediately stop, if you held the throttle it'd run just fine, turned out to be my IAC, no more problems since replacing it. Seems they die in cold weather, causes them to stick.
I got it figured out. The fuel filter was partially plugged. Once I realized the fuel pump only came on for 2 seconds when you turn the key I turned it on and off a couple times and it would have enough fuel to start. Changed the fuel filter and its good as new. Got lucky with a cheap fix.

I have a 97 F150. It will start if push on the pedal and then dies. It will keep running if I keep pushing on the pedal. I replaced the IAC but that didn't fix it. Any ideas?
Could be a vacuum leak. Check the PCV vacuum elbows. Also you might try cleaning the MAF. Have you scanned for codes? You could also have a bad spot on the TPS sensor giving false info the the PCM.
