Hello, I just bought a 99 Explorer V6 SOHC and I love it so far. It has some high mileage, but I just got it and did all the maintence such as filters and flushes, and everything else looks good. I do have some questions for anyone who can help.
Ive heard on the net that maybe the SOHC engine may be the most unreliable of the Explorer engines and maybe something goes wrong with this engine more than others... It this true and is there anything that typically goes wrong with these engines with 100,000+ miles? I hear synthetic oil is the way to go, but is that smart to put in a high mileage engine that has never it before? I am glad there is a forum for this and appreciate the help!
The cam chain drive tensioners and guides wear out and rattle. There is a recall that covers maybe up to 100K miles - ask the Ford dealer. Avg life on these parts is about 35K miles. My brother never changed his and has been hearing a very slight noise for about 40K miles, now at about 70K. Some are worse than others.
Ok, so Ive been doing some reading and I seem to hear that this is a big deal and is costly to repair. Is this something I should do preventative maintence wise or fix it when it breaks?? How much could one expect to spend on this type of repair??
thanks!
Sure a grand if you go to a Ford dealership. You can check the 4.0 engine forum too for more on this. I think the parts are a couple hundred. It's just a PITA job. Pull the radiator and remove all the belt driven accesories to get access to the front timing chain cover. Swap the parts, adjust chain tension and put it all back to gether again. Hopefull you wont loose timing on one of the cams by rotating it when it's all apart. There are some tricks to learn for sure to get it right.
Thanks for all the help. I am just a college student and I can't afford to do all of this so I guess I will just keep driving it till it breaks... Hopefully this isnt something that breaks on every single Explorer with the 4.0. Thank you again!
