this week my truck has had problems starting, lots of white smoke as well as a definate miss till warmed up. Checked plugs, all are ok but noticed
the controller or relay only stays on for 3 seconds and then ticks just like
a clock one second on one off. Whats up? Also is the installation of a push button glow plug control the same on a 7.3 idi as a 6.9? I put one on my 6.9 and love it.
What brand of Glow Plugs are you using? If they are not Motorcraft, made by a company named BERU, get them out of there IF you still can without removing the heads to retrieve the broken off tips. Autolite GPs only last a week if you're lucky, and they like to curl up inside the chamber. And Champions aren't much better. Even if you do have Motorcrafts, one or two could go bad in time. Try 'cycling' the GPs twice before you crank it. It was 16F here this morning and I had to cycle them twice, and she fired up with no stumble and only vapor, no smoke.
Glow Plug Controller By-Pass
Take the WHITE wire OFF the GP Controller(GPC), and insulate it with tape. ADD a wire from where the white wire had come off, and run it to a Momentary Switch on the dash near the Wait To Start light,
from the other side of the Momentary Switch to a good ground.
Also cut the Blue/White wire going to the GPC and connect
that to the terminal on the GPC where the white wire was attached(you’ll now have 2 wires on that terminal), that will make the Wait To Start light come on when you press the button to glow up the plugs for however long you hold the Momentary Switch. Baja/OkieGringo
trooper kelly, the short cycling is classic bad glow plug symptom.
If you checked the glow plugs and they are good, you may need to test the glow plug harness for breaks in the circuit. There is a fusible link before each glow plug on the harness. If a couple of them are toasted it would act just like the glow plugs were burnt out.
I noticed some of the GP connectors to the harness had the plastic tip broken off but did not check voltage to each GP onlt resistance. Can the harness be repaired or must it be replaced?
The plastic is not important, it can be repaired with heat shrink tubing.
If the fusible links are burnt they can be replaced.
The ends can be reattached by soldering.
If the ends are bad, I have not found replacements for the glow plug connector.
If you check the resistance from the glow plug connector to the glow plug terminal on the relay and it has continuity then the harness is OK.
