I have a 7.3L, 2000, PSD. I tried to start her-up this morning (-13 degrees) and on the 5th attempt she fired-up. Let her idle for 15 minutes and then headed down the road. About a mile out she started couching and splitting, losing power, then died. I waited a couple of minutes and she started but ran real rough, was able to drive about 50 yards and then she died, no power either. I let her set for about one hour and she fired right up, drove her home and let her idle. Idles real rough and then dies. Any suggestions? 3000 miles earlier I had the glow plugs changed, replaced one injector, flushed the coolant system and replaced both batteries, plus I run a fuel injector cleaner every other tank of fuel. Could this be a CPS?
When my CPS went...it did a very similar action. Just while cruising started to cough and spit...then it recovered itself for a bit...then did it again....and recovered...then died. Started back up...drove a little bit....and thenfinally coughed and died and would not start. Sounds like CPS to me....or could be CPS i should say.
Thank's for the quick responses, I did start by replacing the CPS, she started right up and ran for about 1/2 mile then started coughing and splitting again. I then drained the fuel off the filter and took the filter out and shook off all the fuel I could, replaced it and she fired up, still running great. Before the day is out I'll replace the fuel filter with a new one. You would think that, that filter would have lasted longer than 3000 miles. Anyway she's running great now and I ended up with a day off from work.
yes, add the appropriate amount of winter-blend diesel fuel additive. it sounds like your fuel has jelled and shaking the filter out will just band-aid the jelling problem until it clogs up again. the warm hand (warmer then jelling point) allowed most of it to turn back into #2 liquid.
Any truck stop has them, most auto parts stores, etc. I personally like diesel kleen, from power service. Runs about 15 bucks for a 96 oz bottle. Will last for 10 fill ups in your tank. Get the white bottle for the winter, grey for the summer.
