Can you dye seat belts?

I just found a smoking good deal on a set of 3 point retractable seat belts, but they are the wrong color. Has anyone tried to dye belts? I don't know if nylon will even accept dye.

Thanks for your help. - Brad

I'd be surprised if you couldn't dye the seat belts. My thinking being, if you spilled the ink from a pen on the seat belt, I bet it won't come out. Find a junk belt and try to dye it. May take a little work to find the right dye but I think it can be done.

This is not my are of expertise. I'm only hypothesising and could be wrong.

I "accidentally" stumbled upon a sewing website this morning where it talked about dying nylon. Apparently there is type of dye that is acidic and will dye nylon. It sounds pretty difficult and involves cooking the acid on the stove. Obviously, you can only go darker with the dye and there is no way to bleach it to remove the color or change it completely.

Long story short, I need to buy belts the color that I need.

I tried that hi-poth-a-nizing one time ...

It took two different kiropractors and a holistic vet to get me back right again... and I still don't think it worked sometimes

sounds like something 55-bubba would do after too much shine....

where the heck is bubba anyways ???

later

HMMMMMMM........ Putting a seat belt in acid doesn't sound like a good idea to me, it may look great, but not have the strength to hold ya when it needs to. I would keep looking for the correct ones.

IMHO Belts are too cheap and too important to be messing with. Many years ago I spent a summer working in the QC lab of the second largest dye producer in the world, and none of our dyes would dye nylon. The color is built into the yarn when it is made.
