redline
i have a 96' f-150 with a 300-6 in it, i have held that thing wide open expecting to hit a rev-limiter and it never hit one, it just sounded like hell, and for a couple seconds afterwards ran like it was about to die. i just put a tach in my truck and i hit 4500rpm's every now and then when im going through some mud and it sounds fine, i don't know what i hit that day it had to be a least 5500.
I have a 93 and added my own tack also (a 2 1/4 inch from P**Boys). I have read other post about the subject and I set my own redline at 3500. No need to go any higher than that, the I6 is not a high rev. engine.
If you have an automatic tranny that is working properly it should shift a few hundred rpm below redline when the throttle is wide open. Anybody want to try it. I did on my wifes 3.0 V6 and it shiftes at 5300 rpm, so that one has a redline in the mid 5K range. For the 300 I6 I have a stick and can't do it, but my guess since the power peak is 3400 rpm that there is no need to go past 4K and probably 3600 to 3800 is the best rpm to shift for all out acceleration.

My power drops off significantly at about 37-3800 rpm. Probaly no point in revving above 3500.
When I was airing out my new cam in 3th gear, I noticed that the revs climb quickly to about 3700 then struggle to get that last couple hundred. I've never hit 4000 in 3rd gear or any gear for that matter.
I'm looking forward to a little head work to push that out a little.

sorry my previous post was by my brother.. I highly doubt it hit 5500..but in any case you want to shift a little after your peak torque / horsepower (depends on application) so that the rpms that you drop in the next shift you don't have as much to climb back up to peak. When looking at the dyno plot knowing how many rpms you drop between shifts you can see when you should shift so that in the rpm range you have the largest area under the curve..
did that make any sense?
Not sure where peak is for the I6 ,but if the peak is around 2800-3200, it sounds like you guys are shifting right in the sweet spot.
