The spare-tire carrier under my hi-boy is just about more than I can handle, unless I'm at home with my floor jack handy anyway. Has anybody come up with a new, improved method for raising the spare back into position, which avoids the hernia potential of the "manual" method? I've spent more time than I care to relate laying on a wet road trying to get the %*#@ tire and wheel to stay on the beam long enough to get the bolt into the slot. I'm wondering if there is a later chain-drive mechanism that would adapt, or ??? Carrying the spare in the bed isn't an option because most of my road miles are made with a slide-in camper aboard. Thanks in advance.

Thanks FastCat. I tried a search before posting, and didn't come up with anything pertinent. Any suggestions on refining a search so I can try again? Do you recall which forum you remember it showing up in?
Appreciate it, Steve
I know what you are talking about.. it sucks to lay down on a wet surface to crawl under the truck to take out the spare. I have considered putting a lowering device where you just stick a bar into a hole on the outside by the bumper and lower/ lift the tire. The problem with this setup is it is not stock and the only device that I have seen do this is on a Ch@vy S-10. I can't stand the thought of a Ch#vy part on my truck!
I am looking for a under-chassis spare carrier for my 76 F-250. If you decide to replace yours with a different system would you consider selling your old one? Please e-mail me if you are interested.

Thanks for the suggestions and link. From what I had deduced (apparently wrongly), most of the "crank-up" mechanisms seem to be on foreign, lighter-duty vehicles that wouldn't handle our meaty heavy-duty 10-ply 16-inch tires/wheels. So, I think I will next try to see if there is one that might adapt to lift the loose end of the mounting beam; that would be just 1/2 of the load. And it also sounds like it would be worth checking my favorite Junque Shoppe to see if maybe they have a later model Ford hanger that would work. Still have hope! Thanks Guys!
