ok guys, here's the deal, I am a lot more familiar with the older( early 70's) Ford small blocks. I own a 84 universal conversion van, I really like the vehicle, and I want to keep it to make a bike hauler out of it. But if I can't figure out this starting prob, I'm seriously considering a stick of dynamite as a cure. The darn thing will crank for a bit, but won't start. Good spark, I can smell gas at carb, choke closes and opens fine, it will almost start when I dump small amount of gas into carb. I did have it started last friday, ran pretty crappy, then wouldn't start again. It's a 351w, with what I believe to be a Ford type 2 barrel, it does have a thermostatic choke on side with wire attatched to it. Since I'm not familiar with which carbs were used on these vans, can you guys tell me what I may be working with, and what problems could be ?

It sounds like there may be a decent vacuum leak. If you can't see any obvious thing like missing vacuum caps, cut booster line, etc, then get out a can of carb cleaner. Shoot some down the carb to get the engine running, then with the engine running, spray lightly around the base of the carb, intake gasket at head, vacuum attachment points. If the engine speeds up, there is a vacuum leak there. If you don't find a vacuum leak, rebuild the carb, the carb is real easy to rebuild, the kit for it is $10-15.
