auto/lock differentials

Can anyone explain to me the difference in auto and lock on my differentails? Why do you need lock if auto works just fine? Is there any difference? Thanks, Eric

You can use the auto setting for daily driving shift-on-the-fly. If you find that you are already stuck and shift it to 4X4, with the hubs in auto, your front axle will not engage. At this point in order to engage the front axle and get un-stuck you will need to manually switch the front axle to lock. The hub on the front axle will not automatically engage unless the wheel is turning.

If you leave it in auto all the time (like I do) just remember to put it in lock at least once a month to keep the hubs from freezing in the auto position - it also lubricates the front axle by driving with the hubs locked-in (even when 4x4 is not engaged via the transfer case).
