Has anyone else had this engine problem?

My wife and I own a 2001 Navigator. We purchased it used in 2003 from a dealer. It had 25,000 miles on it. It was a previous lease vehicle used by an executive.

After driving it for a few years, the vehicle developed a rough idle that could definitely be felt at stops. Recently, the "Service Engine Soon" came on. The light kept going on and off for a few days over a period of a few weeks. Everytime I scheduled to take the vehicle in, the light turned off. Finally, I was able to catch light and took it in.

Upon final inspection, after an extensive teardown, it was determined that the vehicle had a burnt valve and the left block needs to be replaced. The vehicle now has 58k miles. Yes, 8k over and a few months over the standard 4 years/50k mile warranty.

However, I'm not stupid. With any used car that I buy, I always get an extended warranty. Since we are planning on keeping this vehicle for a long time, I bought the Extra Care warranty, up to 100k miles. The end result, the repairs were authorized by Ford after they sent out an inspector to review the damage. Hopefully, I will get the truck back next Wednesday.

A burned valve will run bad all the time. I don't buy it. Do a search here on IAC valve... I would bet that this would be it, and the shop is looking for a Christmas bonus. Scribe that left head to know if they changed it.

I'm with Sanchez.... If you got a CEL then they shouldn't have to tear anything down! Just plug it in and fix whats wrong. The scanner I have reads pending codes as well as hard codes. It is nowhere near as complex as the scanners the dealerships have. They can do on board in motion diagnostics. Sounds fishy to me.... I would get a second opinion from another dealer. It sounds like something stupid like a misfire from a COP or a fouled plug. It could be a cracked PCV elbow..... there could be a few other things... If it starts fine then I would rule out the IAC..... but I would also check the O2 sensors. Hell, I have 179,800 miles on my EX.... The worst thing that has happened was a failed coil pack on the #3 cylinder! Get a second opinion!

i would have to say it is a burned valve. there is no reason the dealer would want to lie about it then not get paid by ford. the inspector deamed it bad. so it costs you 100.00 for the deductable.

And, your heads suffer from a cooling problem that will cause a valve to burn (provided you have the 32 valve Intech motor).

This is what it looks like now...

The also knicked/cracked the rear cover when they were pulling the body off. I just had it refinished too.

I pointed it out to the Service Advisor. Now I'll be getting a new cover.

I also told him that in my experience, when a body is lifted off the frame and re-attached, there are usually "extra" bolts left over. I told him that there shouldn't be any left over bolts. Otherwise, they'll be married to this truck.

He understood and assured me that I'll be happy with the repairs.

Side note: I bring a fleet of about 14 trucks to them for repairs/service on a regular basis. I pump a lot of constant business through that dealer. Plus, I work in the business as well. They know that I'm not joking around and that I'm not a lament to this.
