overdrive type ?

The local Wrecking yard has a stand alone overdrive unit ( .27 under ) in a motor home in the yard. it is clean and looks to be in good shape. the price is right. Their is however somthing neither of us ( the yard guy ) or me can figure out. the shift in and out looks to be mech on a lever but their is a hose that runs to a canister under the hood ( motor and most other stuff is gone ) it doesnt look like a air hose. any one ever seen anything like this ? and of so what is the hose for? This would be a perfict overdrive for my 66 F100 if it would work. Solve the mystery hose and be forever in my gratitude

You cannot plug the vent, it can cause seal to leak/rupture when unit gets hot and air expands in it. It had to have a vent somewhere.

that is most likely a gear vendors od unit .it is mechanicaly controled by a cable, and the hose is connected to a vacuum canister for passing gear.

Thanks , so I would need to pickup a Vacuum canister and run it off of engine manifold vacum ? is this an older Unit? mostly the ones I see actually attach to the back of the trany, this one has yoaks at both ends. so the input would go to my C6 and the output to the rear axle. And down shift would be controled by vacuum? or some kind of vacuum switch ?

Unless it is hooked to a actuaotor on the outside of the case, it is still lilkely just a vent line.

yup. the older units from the 50's and 60's were remote mount cable activated, and used vacuum to downshift. a few different cars that i know of and have seen in use are packard, studabaker, jeep, and ford.

usually they use vacuum to engage, and when you remove vacuum, (floor it) it will downshift to direct drive. once vacuum is restored, you ease off the throttle and it upshifts again.
they work pretty good as long as you have a good vacuum source. a motor with low vacuum, like one with a big cam will have problems running one of these units.
