I recently buy a f250 '77 4x4 high boy with 360 and auto trans for
200$.But the motor was worn out. I had already a f150 '78 4x4 king cab with a 400m in really good shape and 4-speed manual trans.
If it is a 360 the 400M wont bolt up to the 360's transmission. Are you sure it has a 360, if so it must have been a replacement I dont think Ford still put 360's in trucks in 77. But I could be wrong.
On the bright side you can swap all the drive train from the 78 to the 77 if you want.
Sparky,
The 360 (basically a 390 with a 352 crankshaft)was first put in the
F-100 in 1969, in an effort compete with the Chevrolet 350 cid, unfortunately, the 360 was not a very good performer.
You are correct in stating that a 400M will not replace a 360 without a major conversion effort.
You said that you were wondering, if you could swap a 400modified in place of the 360 right? The only way you can do this is to use you transfercase, transmission along with your 400m inplace of the 360. But the only problem that you might have, is lining up the motor mounts. Because (CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG) but I think that the (small block) 360 motor mount are off by what my FORD WRENCH HEAD BUDDY says, "It is off by just a couple of ##### hairs.":7
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Jan-02 AT 08:47 PM (EST)]First things first---The 360-390 engines stopped with the 1976 model year---They were replaced by the 351m\400 engine series beginning in 1977---If somebody put a 360-390 in a 77 truck----They probably wanted to do things the hard way---The logical choice to replace a 351m\400 engine in a 77 model truck is a either a 429 or 460---because the Bolt pattern is the same as the 429\460----i.e. you can use the same tranny and bell housing , but the motor mounts are different and most folks go to the local junk yard or they buy a new set from L&L in dallas , tx who specializes in the 351m\400 conversions over to the 429\460 engines---THE BEST CHOICE is to rebuild the 351m\400 and keep the same engine that came in the truck origionally----just my opinion , fd :-X11
