My son is almost 12 and he is wanting a MP3 player for xmas do not
want to spend a lot on this what do you all out there think i should get?
I don't know anything about them the store will tell you anything to sale then
My knowledge is limited but we do have one. We bought one for around $100. It had a certain amount of memory but it is expandable (using a SD card). It was kind of a pain to convert and put songs on it. Enough so that they lost interest. We did how ever break down and buy both kids an ipod mini and they are much better. They are teenagers and can load and manage the songs themselves. It has also allowed them to recieve gift cards specifically for downloading songs which the family members like because it makes shopping easier. I am not an electronic whiz, but I would do a little research on the ipods since ther are three or four different kinds. We go the "minis" which hold about 1000 songs.
The memory capabilities on those things is amazing, but from my (my kid's) experience- don't overlook some good rechargable batteries. Worthless without them.
On Edit- Many online retailers will let you compare brands and models. It' a good reference for the basic functions.
Bought my son a 20G I-pod that he loves. Bought my daughter an I-pod mini, that she loves. Now, if I were to do it again, I'd buy an I-pod Nano.
The Nano uses flash memory; no miniature hard drive. My son's HD failed, but Apple replaced the unit under warranty.
Think of how kids take care of stuff, and the Nano is bound to give longer service...there's no hard drive to bang around. A 2-gig (500 songs) is $199, a 4-gig (1,000 songs) is $249. Buy direct from Apple; you can get your kids name engraved for FREE on it, plus free shipping. The price it the same anywhere, so it makes sense to buy direct.
IMHO, I strongly suggest the Nano...all other players (including regular I-pods) have a mini hard drive that is more prone to failure.
I paid 100 bucks for my rca mp3 player about a year ago. Now they are even cheaper! One thing I would consider for your kids is how active they are. I do believe that you can still get smaller lighter mp3 players, and I know they work great for running and biking!
remember u get what u pay for! i have a dell 5 gig and i love it. those one gig and smaller mp3 players in my mind are worthless, they can only hold some 240 songs per gig
Thanks for all your help got a 2GB phill the clerk said ipod were nice but not for
a 12 year old he said it all about the name and it cost 129.95 with 10 free down
loads thanks again
I bought a lexar sport for $35.. then several 1gb usb jump drives to go in it ($35 each) and I love it.. I carry the drives on my keychain and use them for all types of files. and it is the easiest thiong in the world to download to the usb jumpdrives... with unlimited number of drives the amount of music is umlimited as well... I have almost 9 gig of music that I can play in the car/truck - my home stereo- work, or just through the headphones. just my .02.
I'm 99% sure all generation 3 and later ipods are all "hard driveless"
You may be right, I'm not sure. But I read an article in the Phila Inquirer that Apple had an exclusive arrangement with Samsung for these flash-memory chipsets, each one holds approx 4 meg, and they just stack them up to get 2 gig or 4 gig in the Nano's. But now Samsung increased capacity to like 12 meg each, so Apple's looking at building LAPTOPS with these chips. Don't quote me on the exact numbers, but it was something like a 300% increase in capacity.
Imagine that...this is non-volatile memory that won't disappear if you lose battery power. And every computer's weakest link (besides the keyboard operator) is the hard drive...if that were to be eliminated and replaced with flash-memory, the thing could go on forever. Plus, it would have less power consumption and less heat generated.
But I don't mean to hijack the thread...I agree with you that I-pod's ARE the standard for all MP3 players.

I have to agree here. I really didn't want to spring for an ipod, but if you really check everything out, you'll wind owning one anyway. Just save yourself that middle step. Check craigslist.org- fair number of new ones for sale at significant savings.
I got my ipod nano last week. I got the black one and if you get the black one get a case for it. I have tried not to scratch it but somehow it happens so get a case if you get a black ipod nano.
