I'd like to see a picture of that "6 door/8ft bed" I've often thought of taking an extended cab and adding it to a crewcab, anyone ever seen that done?
The truck isn`t finished yet but working steady on it.I used two crew cabs.Lookin for rear door panels(prefer black but any color will do),couple of rear doors if price is right. If I can figure out how to post photos(new to forum , sorry)I`ll post photos of the project so far and photo I found of crew cab with extended added with 8 foot bed.Photo was on the internet somewhere.
78crewcabjohn, i have a 78 crew also. Does yours have 2 fuel tanks? I see that yours only has one fuel filler location. Mine has two tanks. Anybody ever seen a short box with 2 fuel filler doors?
I've got a '78 f-250 crewcab stortbed with 2 fuel doors, but get this- only one tank! The rear door is inoperable' and seems to have a stud on the back of the door with a nut on it which prevents the door from opening. I have found no reason to suspect that the bed is not the original, but I can find no evidence that the truck ever had the second tank! There is a piece of angle iron rivited to the frame rails (from one side to the other) right in the middle of where the fuel tank should be. This truck (even though its a '78) has the narrow frame, like a pre-771/2. I know that the 78-79 (wide) frame held the tank between the frame rails, which would not be possible on this frame.
Hey I currently have 8 73-79 crewcabs and I'm trying to sell a couple of them if your interested. Give me a shout. They did make shortboxes with the dual fuel doors, I've got a few. I'm putting one on my 76 project.
Do you still have crewcab parts to get rid of? If so, where are you located?
The switch is not there, but the dash is not the original. There is no fuel selector valve under the truck, but wasnt the rear tank the primary? Seems odd that the truck would have a mid-ship tank, and no aft axle tank. Unless there was something else back there. What kind of spare tire carrier were the highboys equiped with?
How wide is your frame at the rear of the truck? A '79 should be the 37" frame but so should my '78,and its the 34" frame. Does the rear fuel door open?
daddy04, my '78 crew has the 37" wide rear frame, dual tanks, two fuel filler doors in the box (both work) and the fuel tank selector switch on the dash. Looks all factory to me as I have this thing totally tore down to bare frame and nothing on this truck has ever been apart. The truck was undercoated sometime in it's life (probably when new as there is undercoating on the bottom side of the firewall) and both fuel tanks have undercoating sprayed on them. I believe mine came from Canada equiped with the dual tank setup.
Daddy04, just another thought about your frame - are you sure it is a 78 frame???? Do the VIN numbers on the frame match the VIN on the body? Both VIN numbers stamped in my frame match the body VIN number and everything correlates to a 1978 truck. Just a thought.
my frame is 34in i found out when i bought a hitch for a 73-79 ford and it was too wide. i called the hitch manufacturer and told the rep that i had bought a hitch for a 79 crewcab and before i said anything else he said that it was the wrong hitch i needed one 34in . he said the 3/4 ton crew is on the 1ton frame. also my bed has 2doors on the bed with only the front used
