Thermostat

Question?
I finally went and had my thermostat replaced today. I was getting pretty hot air from my heater but my temperature gauge was barely moving off of "C" or it would slowly rise at a light then as soon as I started to move it would fall back to "C" again.
But I have a 99 Ford Explorer 4.0L V6 OHV engine.
Are there different Thermostats that they use for lets say the same L and V6 but maybe a "SOHC" engine.
I know when I was calling around they were asking me which engine besides it being a V6.
The same thermostat that you would use for a "SOHC" wouldn't be the same for the "OHV". One business even asked me about the Vin #.
Well anyway took it to a Ford Dealer and they took care of it and not only do I still have good heat but my Temp. Gauge is working properly again.
Just curious if different T-Stats for the same year as long as a V6.

So what was the cause of your temp gauge fluctuating, I have a '97 and having the exact same problem!

Yes the thermostats are different for OHV and SOHC.

Either the thermostat not working properly or a bad temp. sending unit.

I changed the thermostat. Same thing. I have a infrared thermometer and on the waterneck it would change from 198 to 153 then back up to 198 etc. Any other ideas? Is there a way to check the sending unit?

I would just change it. A new one can't be that much.

Would it be best to change both? Theres one for the sending unit and one for the EEC. One's $30 and the other is $60.

I'm not too sure which one to change. You can check the sending unit's resistance. Check the one with the red/white wire (that's the color for a '99-any engine). A low temperature will result in a high resistance (about 275 ohms) and high temperature will result in a low resistance (about 16 ohms). If the resistance is fluctuating quite a bit once it is warmed up, that could be the problem. Which engine do you have?

4.0 OHV, I dont think the sending unit is bad. I used an infrared thermometer and when the gauge drops, so does the waterneck temp. When the rad cap is off and you watch coolant flow, it doesnt seem steady, sorta fluctuates. I'm thinking theres some blockage, the cooling fins look great tho. Kinda stumped.
