tranny upgrade

I have a stock 2001 7.3, auto, 3.73 gears

I'll be pulling a loaded (two jeeps) gooseneck

What type of tranny upgrade is good for this truck?

Banks Trans Command?

sonnax/tricumulator kit $50, best bang for the buck on a stock tranny.

Hi Rick...I'd start with a transmission temperature gauge, then add the Sonnax/Tricumulator, then a good trans cooler (Tru-Cool 40K), and then top it off with an external transmission filter/drain system. You then can see what your transmission is doing with the gauge, you'll consistently run 40 degrees cooler in the transmission with the cooler, it will shift firmer, and you can change fluid & filter as easily as changing motor oil. BTW, I've also added a magnifilter to the transmission line to the coolers.

A boat load of good advice there can't go wrong with all that stuff!

I agree with nlemerise. The TransCommand is an interesting idea, but from everything I've read, while it DOES made the tranny shift better, there are a number of people who have had tranny trouble within a few months of installing one. I've not heard of that with the Sonnax kit.

I also agree with the order - if you have a trans temp gauge, you'll know when to stop and cool off, even if you have no other mods.

i have the same gears in my 02 and i tow a 5ver that weighs 10k... i went with the sonnax kit, tru-cool low pressure drop cooler added to the stock setup, and of course a tranny temp gauge in my gauge package... fluid and filter change using sythetic tranny fluid... and all seems to be working well... temps are well under 200 at all times... tranny shifts very well...

The info sounds good so far. I thank you all. It really makes good safes sense to think about getting the life out of the components first so you are not strsnded someplace far from home.

I am also thinking about an exhaust brake. Any reccomendations?

Whoes gauge packagese do you like?

Prefer the A-piller mount or under the dash?

Do a search for home-made exhaust brake using your EBPV.

As for where the gauges are mounted? I had to go with a pillar mount...

I would get a pillar mount, much easier to glance over and check gauges. I have the ISSPRO gauges and love them. They look like stock and the pyro gauge is color coded which may sound like no big deal but makes it very easy to get a quick read when you are getting into higher temps. I bought my gauges as a kit from Diesel Manor, everything included for about $330. Came with very good instructions also.
