Seems to me a shorter and wider 305/70 would need another wider rim or you'd get the middle bald thing happening unless you run the pressure low and that's bad for the sidewalls and heat. Just how it seems to me, but I don't know. I know people do it.

Looks to me like the 305's have more sidewall than the stock 265's ... and about the same as the 285's. Now... they are obviously wider... but shouldn't the tires themselves have some recomendations on the rim width? What is the rim width of the stock rim?
Nothin is required when changing tire sizes, but speedo change is recommended so you know how fast you are going. Stock rim width is 7 inches. I have 315/75-16 on stock rims. After 16K miles, no issues and I have even wear. I rotate every 5K and rebalanced them at 10K. At 10K, only one tire really needed to be rebalanced. Every tire has a recommended rim width range, but it is a recommendation only. If I had wider rims, I could bump the pressure up a little and still have a full contact patch, but I am happy with what I have and love the look of stock.
I have the mich. ltx m/s (265) and they are great tires. I am opting for the more aggressive look though of the goodyear mt/r (285) this month. both are in the E range
I have had a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Claw radials on my 2002 Ex for the past two years without single rub. They are 305/70/16 , and I keep them jacked to 50psi.
Only issue is that the tires are on the soft side , and have really taken a hit on the street. Agressive as hell look , just real soft.
I think I will be going to Wrangler MT/R's in the same size in the spring..
just buoght an 03 eddi 6.0 it has 20/305/50 when i picked it p from the dealer all the tires were at 30psi so i move them ur acording to the sticker on the gas door i think it was 55psi front and 50 rear not sure that was right be the tires looked almost flat when i got it. I like the look but worried about towing my mustang and trailer
Isn't it also with our tires that you have to look at how they're riding. Pretty subjective, but I don't have a more concrete answer.
50/55 psi is the inflation recomendation for the stock 265 tires. We're talking about 305 tires here ... which are 40 mm wider. That increases the contact patch and thus reduces the overall required pressure. If we had a good estimate of the length of the contact patch, we could probably estimate a ratio.
I have also heard to actually weight each axle and divide by 2 to determine the weight on each tire. Take the max rated weight for the tire and divide by the real weight. Whatever that number is divide the max pressure rating by it and that is the reccomended pressure for that tire.
