Compass/Temperature Rear Mirror

Where to you guys locate your temperature sensor for the temp/compass mirror? Where is it located from the factory? I just ordered one on ebay and just was curious were the best place to mount the sensor to the temp/mirror. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I just picked up a New in Box Gentex mirror off E-Bay also for $60. The temp sensor was another $25 (also off E-Bay). After much consideration I mounted the temp sensor on the fiberglass support behind the driver's side vertical rib of the front grille. After taking the grille off you'll see two vertical supports behind the the two vertical ribs of the grille. Wiring went up and across and "zip-tied" to the hood release cable which I used as a carrier. Once you're up to the firewall there are four "pass-though" wires which go from under the hood to inside under the dash for extra owner installed accessories. I had used these for a remote starter install (also off E-Bay) so I ran my temp sensor wires though the cover plate over the access hole for the manual clutch equipped vehicles.

I tapped power for the mirror off C270-23, which is a delay off circuit that supplies power to the radio. It's a pink wire that's accessible on the back of the under dash fuse panel. This is all fresh because I just completed it about two weeks ago.

thanks for the info, you got a great deal there. I saw some going for $120 on ebay that looked nice. But not Gentex. So still trying to find out where those temp sensors are mounted from the factory?

I asked the same question here, for the same reason:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=433071

Those replies along with some info from a couple other websites led to me mounting it where I did. The info form the other sites wanted it "between the frame rails" and in the path of moving air once the truck is moving. They mentioned that the temperature displayed would climb if the truck was left idling but would return to normal a couple minutes after the truck was moving and that "normal" was anything 4-6 degrees from the actual temperature of the air. The 4-6 degree variance is taken into account because at 37 degrees the display starts blinking "ICE" for one to two minutes then resumes normal function.

Mount it in the front exactly as dmp437 stated. I work at Gentex and that is where we mount them. I have a factory temp in my overhead and one in my mirror and the sensors are mounted right next to each other behind the grill.

It's a lot easier and would take less time than to try and mount it with the grille in place. The front grille is held on by four Phillips screws across the top and four clips across the bottom. Remove the four Phillips screws on the top then take a flat bladed screwdriver and insert it into the clip and rotate it 90 degrees and the clip is released from the body. Start on one side and work over to the other. Grille removal takes about 5 minutes.

Ok still kinda lost of exact temperature probe location. I have removed the grill and this is where I mounted it. Does this look correct?

From the Gentex install page:
NOTE: The preferred location for the temperature probe is in the center
of the grille or some place where it will be in free air in front,
or to the side, of the radiator. Down near the bumper may also
be used. Avoid locating it inside or in front of the wheel well,
engine compartment, or too close to the headlamps. Try to
keep the height no higher than the center of radiator, and
no lower than 8" above the pavement. Always try to keep the
temperature probe in the center of the vehicle; never locate
it outside of the frame rails.
I've got mine more towards the center on one of the vertical supports. The temperature rises about 1-2 degrees while idling (remote stater) but goes back down once I'm on the road. I'm not sure the location in the picture could be considered "free air" since there is no way for the incoming air flow to exit out the rear.

Hello I just aquired the Gentek mirror with homelink, dimming, temp/compass and map lights for my 05 F350 SD CC PSD LB

I hope I'm not beating a dead horse... but where exactly did dmp437 install his sensor probe?

Is it possible to share the probe feed off the factory probe?

Where did everyone get a solid always on power lead?

Where did everyone get a solid switched power lead?

Where can I get a door light power lead?

Somebody mentioned a location to pull wires through the firewall. I dont seem to able to locate that. Any photo's or good directions?

Thanks in advance for anyones help

I put mine at the location dmp437 suggested and works quite well. After turning off the engine it can go up as much as 30 degrees F. But once moving again it quickly goes back to realtime temperature.
It's very easy to get wires through the firewall. My 99 F250 had quite a big plastic cover right behind the master cylinder. I removed that black cover and easily routed my wires though the firewall.

Thanks riverrat...

I installed it over the weekend. I ended up zip tying the new temp sensor right next to the factory sensor. I dont seem to have any idle run-up and only 1 degree difference between the two.

For simplicity I just ran a lead wire back to the dome light to get that power and found solid switched and constant 12v under the dash for everthing else.

All is working fine. I guess the only issue i have is that i now have two -- in my insrument cluster where the factory compass use to read. Easy to get over that one!

Take care,
Alan
