My father-in-law lives there and just purchased one as well, picked 18K. Kinda funny how when you go over the 12K you just run a single front plate... Really screws up alot of things outside MO that rely on the back plate being there.
Here in TX we just go by GVWR and its nice that they use the 8800 Lbs of the base 4x2 truck instead of my 10K rating of my F250 CC 4x4. Saves some bucks.
What really bites is that my 195 lb jetski trailer costs almost the same as my truck to get plates on each year!!
chris, is the front tag only because they are thinking that if it is over 12k, it probably got a trailer behind it. tractor trailers don't usually have rear tags. that would screw things up bigtime in PA. if you came up here in a pickup with no rear tag, you would be pulled over and being asked where your rear tag is about 10 minutes after entering the state. even if you aren't supposed to have it, they would bust your stones about it.

I live in MA and when I bought the F350 SRW (11,500 GVWR) in June was told anything over 10,000lbs. GVWR had to have commercial plates. I tried to transfer my passenger plates from my Ram 1500 and was told no. If there is a legal way to get around the commercial plate requirement I'd like to know. Just re-registered (because plates expire every November) for $185 per year! That's crazy.
I own an 03 F350 SD CC in MA, it is registered in my name, but I run a business as a Sole Prop., kind of a grey area, no lettering required, after asking everyone at Registry, and Ins. Co., I just switched to Redsox Plates, Jimmy Fund, you get a tax deduction for part of the plate and it is a much nicer looking plate, except for the fact the Redsox are probably going to suck this year. You can also get one with the Patriots logo, fish on it, a whale, lighthouse, whatever your thing is. I run a cap on the back, but I suspect I could get my b's broken if I ever got stopped by Super Cop. What is the GVW of an F350 CC? My rating on the door jam doesn't match my reg. Hmmm.
I have D plates in Illinois. With my snowplow and equipment I pull I need the commercial plates. If the state trooper pulls you over and you don't have the right plates here in Illinois it is a heavy fine. I didn't have to pay sales tax on my 2005 F-350 with the D plates. The downside is the D plate is $200.00 a year and I have to take my truck to the safety lane 2 times a year a $20 dollars a trip.
When I tried to register my 2000 CC Lariat LB GVW 9900lbs my insurance agent told me I needed commercial plates because MA rounds up to the nearest 100 and because I am at 9900lbs they consider it a 10,000lb vehicle and according to there policy anything over 10,000lbs needs to be commercial even though I use it as a personal truck (some occasional side work) but its just plain BS! if someone owes me $560.00 can I round it to 600.00 for easier bookkeeping? no I don't think so but that is basicly what my insurance agent told me the state does and it just cost me $155.00 to register my truck for a year? crazy!!!
i just got scewed today registering my 05 supercab in NY. 5500lbs is the limit for passenger plate this thing was 5775 in the dmv computer. commerical plates suck doesnt let you park on the streets, limits you to not being able to drive on the parkways all for a lousy 275lbs. i know i see guys driving 250's on the parkways with passenger plates, if anyone knows how to get around that and get passenger plates please let me know.
What really sucks in TX is that the new 7000 lb truck only costs $96.25/yr to get plates for, however my 268lb jetski trailer costs $47.07 a year for plates.
