Commercial registration?

Hey guys just wondering about registering an '05 or '06 F-350 SRW SD. Since the gvw is now over 11K, I was wondering if it is now mandatory for the trucks to be registered with commercial plates. If it helps I reside in MA. I might be upgrading to one in about 1.5 years so I was curious. Thanks for the info!

I don't know about your state, but in Idaho if your gvw is over 8000 lbs you have to register commercial.

I do live in MA and you do not have to register it as a commercial vehicle if it is your daily driver.. I have an 06 f350 GVW 11400 that I have a plow on.. They always ask if it has a plow you should register it as a commercial.. I don't plow for a business so I just tell them that and I register it regular. Commercial plates are just a money maker for the state, nothing more. THe only caviat is that if you do use it as a business and try getting away with not registering as a commercial then they can stop you and give you a ticket, fine amogst other things..

You can also check ouit the registry website for their take on it..

in ND and SD you see the scale signs saying all trucks over 8000GVW must enter RV's excluded.....a private 1 ton dually is the same as an RV....no need to register it commercial, or go through scales, or log, or ......anything. just like a car but you pay more for insurance. i agree with above, if you do use it for commercial though, you can get into serious trouble.

I live in Ma to, Don is right on, had my truck reg both ways, decided to go back to pass tags because i beleive i was paying 166.00 a year for the comm plates and now i'm paying under 60.00 for two years pass plates, ( could be a little off on both figures) . But i'm taking a big risk with my pass plates because i haul a few times a year heavy loads of gravel 2-3 ton at a time. Try to stay on the back roads to avoid smokey but if i get caught its gonna be some big $$$$s. If you plan on hauling big or heavy loads or using it for other then private use, my advise go with the comm plates.(maybe i should take my own advice)

I also live in mass. When I bought the truck, The dealer put regular tags on it. A few weeks later my insurance company notified me that they would no longer insure my truck with regular plates I needed commmercial plates. My truck is a dually with a 13000 gvw. On a dually you have to have commercail plates in mass. on a single rear wheel in your gvw exceeds 10000 pounds you will be fined so much for every 1000 pound over the limit in you have no commercial plates. I don't use my truck for a business just personal use and to tow my jeep around. I have fought very hard to get regualr plates, I just renewed my commercial plate for 200.00 dollars. what a rip off this state is.

Yeah Massachusetts isn't one of my top ten favorite states. But thanks for the info guys. It won't be a business truck, so in 2007 I'm gonna try hard as hell to get regular plates for it. The state takes enough of my money as it is.

OMG Shawn, $200.00 a year now wow, At times when hauling wish i had gotten a dually and was gonna get a new one next year, (now not so sure) 200.00 vs 30.00 a year, thats $340.00 more every 2 years then i'm paying now! just to have 2 extra tires thats insane. Maybe new truck with single way to go, with a trailer for the loads. Sure seems the dealer should have known that and made you aware of it. Something fishy there.

I thought something was fishyy too. If There was a problem registering the truck as a non commercial the DMV should have notified the dealer ASAP. Not let me take it and drive around illegally. It does suck but when towing my jeep with my truck the total weight is around 13000 pounds anyway. 7800 for the truck, 1800 for the trailer and 4000 for the jeep. So I guess it is better to be legal.

wow, glad i live out here in the midwest where they dont have as many ridiculous stupid rules. in Missouri, you register the truck for what you want to haul, not what the capacity of the truck is, so i could register my 02 250sd for 6k,12k,18k,24k, and so on. i know of a couple guys that haul hay bales that are tagged for 42k on a f450. all kosher in my state. although i wouldnt worry about a couple loads of gravel now and then, how does that cop know that that gravel isnt for your driveway? so long as your tagged for the weight, it doesnt have to be a commercial tag

The funny part guys, is the fact that I don't even need a heavy truck like an F-350, but I'm 21 years old, and I've NEVER owned a car. My first set of wheels was a '93 Ranger 2WD 5 spd with a very small 4 banger under the hood. Then I went to a '94 Ram 1500 4x4. Both were good trucks. Now I drive a '00 F-250 4x4 PSD. I refuse to own anything but a heavy duty truck. It's what I love. There are plenty of guys out there who aren't on the same side as me, but that's like saying you shouldn't buy basketball shoes if you're not going to play basketball in them. Buy what you like I guess!

We too register the truck for the amount you want to (same goes for trailers, mine is actually registered for 2000# over its gvw) haul..My 01 250SD is tagged for 24K..BUT that 200 bucks you pay looks pretty good since I just paid $330 for mine..Here we pay through the nose for the first 5yrs of the vehicle and then the rate goes down after that, not much but it does go down..Guess that is the price we pay for not having a sales tax..Just my 2 cents..

i live in PA, and with my ram 2500 4x4, i am registered as class 1. thats a 5000#gvw. thats what the dealer did. it should be a class 2. it is a TRUCK tag. but not commercial. you have to register any truck that is used for business vehicle as COMMERCIAL. f150 through f750. i've had mine since 98' and never had problems. now my X, in PA, is considered a station wagon. it registered as a car.----$76. for my ram and $36. for my X. thats yearly. the plate actually says "TRUCK" or "COMMERCIAL" or i think, "WWW.VISIT PA.COM" all at the bottoms of the tags.
