i have a 81 ford f150 with a 302 how do u install a tachometer and a after market speedometer on this truck? and what all do i have to have to do the install?
You can install a factory tachometer and speedometer with tripometer in the truck if you already have a ammeter guage and oil guage.
Tachometer 1980 to 1986
If you have guages instead of idiot lights, the process of getting a tachometer in your truck is very simple. Plug and play. just remove your old cluster, and put in the new one with a tach in.
1980 Install
If you have a 1980, the cluster out of a 1981 to 1986 will not work for you, you will have to get a cluster that has the circut board number E0TF-10C956 with tach. There may be a suffex number at the end of the part number but make sure the first four letters and number are "E0TF" for the cluster to work right for you.
1981 to 1986 Install. Make sure the numbers on the circut board on the back of the cluster reads E1TF-10C956 with tach. There may be a suffex number at the end of the part number but make sure the first four letters and number are "E1TF" for the cluster to work right for you.
You can repaint the needles on the guages using a fluorescent paint marker such as testors #2575 fluorescent Red Paint Marker. Remove the clear plastic cover, and with an index card, place the card behind the needles to protect the face of the guages, and carefully paint the guage needles. Be carefull not to bend the needles when you do this, or smuge the white lettering on the guage faces. Oxidation may have made the white paint on the guages very fragile. Be sure to use a flourescent paint marker because green light and "Non Fluorescent Red" will turn the needles black at night.
I have an '83 Ford Bronco and I purchased a factory speedo and tach which should have been a no-brainer to install. The tach does not work, but everything else does. On the back of the cluster reads E1TF-10C956-B. I purchased my bronco used. It has been striped of the brain box that was under the driver’s seat. I'm trying to find out which connection goes to the tach. I have a wiring diagram that shows pin #11 on the plug (that has 18 connections). That connection goes to the (-) coil, as I tried to connect this to the coil, and fried the control module. On the tach, I have 4 connections which are labeled, (left to right, bottom to top), 8 B 1 G. 2 adjacent to mounting studs. Do you have some insight on how to get the tach working? Is there a way to use the existing wiring to connect it? Is there a way to test the tach for functionality, or am I just out of luck? I appreciate your expertise on this, for I am stumped, you can email me if this is easier.
It sounds like the previous owner may have cut the tach wires out when they removed the computer, or hooked them up in a different way than factory.
Here is how the tach should be wired.
8 Terminal: Should be grounded ONLY if you have an 8 cylinder engine.
B Terminal: 12V positive power from ignition switch in run.
I Terminal: From the coil tach test connection at coil.
G Terminal: Common Ground connection
All these wires should already be at the instrument cluster connector, however, not knowing the state of your wiring this installation could be "problematic".
Thanks for the identification, I'll give this a try, I now can chase the wires and discover where they go. I sure the tach works. That was part of the deal.
