Tachometer

I'm thinking about buying a tachometer for my 1979 f150. I would like to know good brands and how I would install the tachometer on my truck.

What's your budget?

Higher end... Autometer
Decent... Sun SuperTach II or III
Lowbuck... SunPro

Visit a car show/swap meet and search for gold

Four wires:
Black - ground
Green -tach signal
Red - Switched power
Blue - instrument lighting

I don't think I want to pay anything over 60-70 bucks, and thanks for the help.

Sun SuperTachs are around $45 from Autozone.

Follow the directions to install.

Sounds good, that's probably what I'll go with. Thanks again for the help.

For mine, instead of hooking the switched power wire to the ignition and the instrument lighting wire to my actual light switch which I understand can be a pain, I hooked them both to a yellow connector under the dash. If you look up underneath there between the driver's kick panel and steering column you should see it. Its bright yellow and has three ports (you can use any of the 3). The connector is only hot in the run position and accepts male bullet crimp connectors very easily. It definitely saved me a lot of time. The only downside, which I don't consider a downside at all, is that the tach backlighting is always on. I can't tell at all during the day, and its on at night when I need it to be. Saved me a lot of time tearing into the headlight switch or molesting any other existing wiring.

Yeah that sounds a lot easier than tearing into the switch, I'll have to look for that connecter tomorrow. Thanks for the idea.

Closest I found for that connector was at Napa, it isn't an exact fit but it will work. It will be snug though. It's a .156 bullet or something like that. I threw away the marking on my box.
Napa was the only one close to me that had it in stock without ordering online may be different in your woods.

If yallz are interested in installing a low-buck, quick disconnect for your tachometer, use a 4-pin male and female trailer wiring harness

I think my dad might actually have one that size in in his box of connectors and splices.
