When was the 1st year for the 5spAuto in the 7.3

I'm thinking about possibly looking for a 2002 F250 with a 7.3 and haven't seen any adds that state if they have a 4 or 5 sp auto.

i think it is a 4 speed auto... the "5th" gear is actually just the t/c locking up... somebody tell me if i'm wrong...

the last year for the 4r100 and the first year of the 5r110 (torqueshift) was in 2003. all 7.3 automatics that year had the 4r100. however, the 6.0 was released in that year also, but it had the 5r110. i have never seen a 6.0 with 4 speed, or a 7.3 with torqueshift. but that would be awesome!if you consider locking and unlocking the torque converter in the same gear two gears, then you could well enough call the 4r100 a 7 speed automatic.

so, is the torqueshift a true 5-speed auto that also uses the t/c lockup feature..? i'll be honest, i don't know anything about that tranny, but i have had one guy i met tell me the tranny that was in his 2004 was junk, and the dealership could not fix it, although they tried 5 times.... ford ended up buying that truck back from him... i'm sure i could learn more about this tranny on the 6.0 forum... i was just curious...

I agree that all 7.3's have max of 4 auto gears. My 02 definately is a 4speed auto. Works well, the 5 and 6 speed autos are awesome. Wonder who has swapped a torqueshift to a 7.3? Is the bellhousing the same?

the torqueshift is actually a 6 speed, but uses 5 gears selectively. 5th gear is considered top gear in tow/haul mode, while in tow/haul off, 6th gear is like a second overdrive. i believe 4th is direct drive.

we have one of those puppies in our 2004 6.0. it was replaced with a factory remanned one, at about 17,000 miles. when you put it in reverse and tried to accelerate, it would just shudder and grind. alot of the parts were fried. however, the transmission is one awesome slushbox.

tomorrow morning, we are taking delivery on a 2006 f-250 SC SB. powerstroke with torqueshift automatic. its a work truck for me

the accountant said that we had to buy something big, or else Uncle Sam would take it. our income to expenses ratio put us in a class where we would have to pay alot more taxes than if we would have bought something. we are putting the plow on our red f-350 on that, (the 3/4 ton front is "too light"), so the v-blade we were going to put on my truck is now going on the red 350.

i'm glad to hear your doing well... it is nice when the economy is chugging along and folks are doing well... i don't have those kinds of issues with uncle sam, and my big purchase this year is gonna be a new dishwasher for the wife for christmas... mine is a much simpler life lived at a much lower pay grade..!

Wrong.

Here are the gear ratios:
1st - 3.11:1
2nd - 2.2:1
3rd - 1.54:1
4th - 1.09:1
5th - 1:1
6th - 0.71:1

Fourth is the gear ratio that is rarely used because it is so close to fifth. In a normal upshift, in or out of tow/haul, it shifts 1-2-3-5-6. In tow haul the shifts are later, but it uses the same gears.

All 7.3Ls had the four speed auto, and all 6.0Ls have the 5 (6) speed auto.

Installing a 5 speed TorqShift in a 7.3L would be quite a job. The bellhousings are not the same, and the length is not the same. But those are the easy parts to fix. Making a computer that can run the TorqShift behind a 7.3L would be very, very expensive.

Yup. That's the problem. The rest would be normal hot-rod adaptation, but the computer issue makes it virtually impossible for normal people - or even for abnormal ones.

When (not if) my tranny finally goes, I will probably switch to a 6-speed manual. I've never liked automatics.

Still, by putting in a trans temp gauge, a proper shift kit, a trans cooler, and a bypass external filter, you can increase its life and make the 4r100 more tolerable.

thanks for correcting me. i knew something wasnt right about it, i am not too familiar with automatics, but i do remember now that 4th is so close to 5th that they dont use 4th much.

oh and Johnny8, here are pics of the truck, just picked it up an hour ago.
