Greets, just finished upper and lower ball joints on both sides my '95 f-150 extra-cab 4X4. Holy cow! tough to get those knuckles off!!!!
While I had everything apart, I found one of my (two piece) hub/rotor assemblies was loose, closer inspection showed me that the rotor holes for the studs were all worn oval, so the hub and rotor had about 1/2" of play, side to side, and about 1/8" between rotor and hub.
Inspected parts, hub was fine, bought new studs, rotor, wheel nuts, knocked out old studs and proceeded to install new studs through rotor and hub.
This is where i am running into what may, or may not be a problem.
I tapped the new splined studs into place from back side to set them, and then started to tighten them with air (two big washers under nut to take up space for shoulder of stud when fully seated)
Problem is, it seems to be taking way too much gun to get theses thing seated. I am sitting now with about 1/8 of an inch to go to get these little buggers seated and am afraid to pull too much on these studs.
This may be why the last jackass left these like this
Had the truck since "96 never had any weird shimmy or anything, I should have noticed something!
Any help or advice, if you have done this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I use a pnch or air hammer to drive them in,from the back side. But I believe '95 has front ABS so you have to be careful not to damage the "tone" ring.
I've used a punch before, and it works most of the time. I've run into stubborn ones where I've had to use an impact to tighten them all the way, too. How big is your impact? I used a 1/2 stubby, so it was not lacking in torque. I doubt a 3/8" gun will do it.
thanks, I finally just kept at it with my 3/8 gun and they finally sucked in real slow.
your comment about abs twigged a thought with me.
my truck has abs self test light when starting but I don't think I have front or rear abs, I have seen the wiring on my explorer and have nothing at all like it at either axle on my 150. is this possible? '95 xlt should have abs should it not?
Yeah, I'm having the exact same problem. I used to work at a shop and have seen the pros do it before, knock em out, air hammer them in, then snug them up the rest of the way with a gun. However, when I went to do the gun... umm... yeah, I seized the lug nut on the stud. *****! Grrr... the rest of them won't set all the way. There is like thousands of an inch of play. Not sure if I should just throw them on, keep pounding away?
Its a real nice Husky, top of the line. However, I'm using a **** poor portable tank, so it loses pressure REAL quick. I am using the old studs too... this might be a problem. News ones might seat better. Noo... no, you'd think the old ones would seat easier, they've already been in there. Hmm... well I know I have to buy one new stud for sure (i know they come in kits) bc my gun just kept cranking and cranking and now the SOB wont come off. Must have chewed those threads up. Well... I know what I should do, seat them all the way. Thats the correct way to do it. I suppose I'll just keep trying.
