I realize that this forum is for OPEN discussion, but when a site originally intended for the discussion and exchange of ideas about a PICKUP TRUCK starts asking if there's a God, then it's just gone too far. Let's save that stuff for more appropriate websites and radio call-in shows. Yes, I know this is a free country, where we have the right to speak our mind, but there is a time and a place for everything, and THIS is the place to discuss trucks- not religion. The closest I'll come to that subject is to state that there are no atheists in Chevys, for many times you'll hear them say "oh please, God, just let this thing get me home!" So, can we just please lighten up a little?

I'm not a big fan of the religous or political posts, as those cause the most heated debates - however, this is the "General Conversation" section, and is intended for just that!

That's true Knobby.

It's a shame though that people forget that all about the intent of the subject but instead, unfortunately, make personal attacks like calling one a moron or stupid.
Then the moderators have to step in an lock the thread because of this.

There are a few subjects that I won't enter. > One of them being Religion.

Opinions! We all get one.

MarkII,
I've been hanging around these parts for a good long while now. I enjoy a lot of the forums. There is a simple solution to the items that you aren't fond of - and it's a lot like TV or radio - if it don't interest you, just don't click on it.
The MAIN thing I like about the General Forum is the fact that you NEVER know what you'll find.
Case in point - we can discuss the existance of God and a few lines down, learn all about potato cannons!
Just my .02

And if you play with potato cannons enough, you can meet God!

The general conversation section is my favorite. I work at a job that doesn't provide many mental exercises, so when I get home, I enjoy reading peoples' opinions, laughing at jokes, and sometimes trying to answer a trivia question!

(That part about the mental exercises doesn't sound right....I can hear the jokes already!)

them guys are absolutely right. there's so much different and interesting stuff to read about and learn from on this website it hurts my head
seriously though, just because everyone gets in a heated discussion or an argument over something they value or believe in doesn't mean its wrong. its called learning and building character and tolerance. not every conversation has to be sugar coated so that nobody is offended. thats certainly not how i was brought up. i take conflict right in stride- it doesn't bother me one bit. being able to have a thread like the religion one, and take part in it, is a good way to learn different peoples views and aspects on an issue. it also makes you think. i thoroughly enjoyed reading every part of it to see what everyone had to say. and i added my own comments as well. nobody is forcing you to read it, if you don't like the way the conversations and replies were conducted, don't shift the blame to those people who took part in it all, blame yourself for looking at it in the first place, and continuing to look at after it made you upset. theres 3900 other topics in just the general conversation forum which you can read.

I live on an island way out in in the South pacific, and this forum is my ONLY contact with fellow Ford truckers on the mainland. I like to come to the general consersation section just to see how and what people are doing in general. Like the man said, just don't click on the subjects that don't interest you.

1956MarkII, I'm glad our host doesn't feel the same way about it as you do. The General forum is here for us to discuss anything BUT Ford trucks.

By starting this topic to air your opinion, I think you can see the value of a General or 'off topic' forum.

I like the General forum because it's refreshing to read what everyone else's interests and opinions are, besides trucks.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Dec-02 AT 02:30 PM (EST)]There are about 78 different topic headers where you can not talk about general topic, God, Religion, Politics, Etc. only Truck specific conversation is allowed, and ONE where you can talk generally.

You actually want to sensor that one 1/78 that is so popular with everyone? Why? Do you have truck topics that don't fit elsewhere?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Dec-02 AT 02:43 PM (EST)]I have to admit that I couldn't seem to get to like the General Forum for the longest time. The truck-specific forums, and the part-specific forums, were, and continue to be, my favorites. But through the casual perusing of the General Forum I have come to really appreciate these people who own Ford trucks.

Everything posted in the General Forum is, in some small way, a part of what makes some, if not all, of us truck people in general, and Ford Truck Enthusiasts in specific.
Everything posted here is ignored, posted upon, and/or sided with or against depending on the beliefs each one of us hold. Somehow--and this is the beauty of it--those all mesh to make us, well, us -- Ford Truck Enthusiasts.

Now don't get me wrong - it's not that I go around proud to be a FTE-site user. It's just that I have come to appreciate (though I am quite sure I did before anyway) the lives and beliefs of those who, collectively, probably create a better world (IMHO) to live in than some other groups do on this planet.

My advice (from experience), 1956MarkII, (and believe me, this is not meant to be critical nor cruel in demeanor or tone - it is merely a suggestion) is to just not visit this forum until you have nothing better to do than to just read through posts here for the heck of it (and this is what I did). In time you may participate, or you may not, but there are tons of other forums to create posts in that follow most any tangent you could think to follow.
(There again, I can understand that there may not be a forum which centers around some aspect of Ford Trucks (e.g. future designs, total body modifications, etc., ?) that you want to attract visitors to to discuss certain themes. My suggestion, then, would be to suggest a new forum, and its proposed purpose, to Ken.)

Don't know what else to say other than I think I've been there, and I sort of understand what you mean. The big problem is that life is more complicated than some would want it to be, and that humans have a basic need to communicate, be heard, and (believe it or not) to hear other peoples' opinions. At first the free-flow nature of the General Forum does seem to instigate political and/or religious tones that some people try to get through life without addressing, or addressing then attempting to live without talking/thinking about them again but, according to Plato, "The life which is unexamined is not worth living," thus the General Forum seems, to me, to serve more purpose than might be perceived.

Best,

This forum is an excellent tool to sharpen one's logic, clearify one's thinking, and sometimes even to change one's view of something. I find the folks here at FTE pleasant, informative, and most of all, entertaining. It sure beats the hell out of TV, talk radio, and trivial pursuit. The fact that all subjects, within reason and good taste, are fair game, always make it interesting. Thanks to all who participate and Happy Holidays to all.

My Christmas wish from FTE......Please show my membership on the forum because I don't want my fellow members to think me too tight to join.:-X12

OK here goes Im gonna throw my $0.02 into this topic...

Personally I think it comes down to a simple little thing called personal responsibility...If you see something that offends you,DONT KEEP LOOKING!!!!!!...If you find something funny LAUGH!!!, dont try to blame the person that wrote it, it is possible it dont offend others.

Personal responsibilty, as I see it, has been completly lost in society today, like all these people sueing the tabacco companies because they got cancer from doing something they knew was bad for them!!!! DUH!! The women that sued McD's because she spilled hot coffee on herself... come on people lets grow up and relize thing we do to ourselves is our own responsibility.

Now before i get myself any deeper into trouble i must clearify that i have watched and been involved with some discussions on this board and i must say all the very fine people that visit this site and have gotten into the discusions have been completely kind(for the most part lol) and been open to other opinions no matter if they where the same as their own or not..

just my $0.02
please no hate mail!!
